Shin Splints

Hi all, new to this part of boards:) Didn't know it existed. Anyway, my question is about shin splints. I have started running recently(gym), I was never a long distance runner but after only 10 minutes or so my shins get severly sore. It's very frustrating for my legs to give up before my breath as I'm just starting out. What I wanted to know is if it's my runners, bad legs or just plain and simply unfit?
Ps. I can do 40 min cardio on bike and 40 on crosstrainer but the treadmill is my worst enemy. All replies welcome as I'm new to running and this forum. Thanks again.

Can someone please move this post to appropriate section, sorry. Mistake

Shin splints are a common problem for new runners. There's a detailed discussion in this thread, but the basic problem is usually that you're doing too much too soon, putting your legs under stresses that they aren't used to.
