SKY Signal Loss on out-of-warranty box

My Sky signal has starting to fail heavily today, even though the weather isn't extreme. I've done all tests suggested by Sky, but nothing changed.

I called them to see what was going on. On previous occasions they would blame the weather or say it was something temporary. But today they went straight to "your box needs to be repaired and as it is out of warranty, it is chargeable at €100". That pissed me off, as when the box was in warranty they'd never mentioned they could send someone to fix the box. And the box is just out of warranty (2 weeks ago). Now they just want my money to do what probably is a simple adjustment.

It is ridiculous how they didn't try to solve the problem using conventional troubleshooting. I am thinking about cancelling the whole thing, their customer support is awful.

Has anyone had any similar problems with sky?

usually if ask to be put through to cancellations they will send out someone free.

there is a thread about it.

Is that the "Cancelling Sky - Sky calling your bluff" thread? If not, could you point me to the right direction so I can try to contact more people who have had the same issue?

    Thanks!

Just ring Sky and if they quote you €100 call out fee then simply ask for cancellations as the box is only just out of warranty.Guaranteed that they'll fix it for free.Mention that you are considering UPC (even if you're not) and you'll definitely get a free service call.;)

    Thanks for the replies.

I tested the box on a friend's house and it is working perfectly!

It is probably the satellite dish - I will ask a few neighbours if they're having the same issue. Or the cables... In this case I'll have to threaten to cancel the whole thing and move to UPC.

Does anybody know if Virgin is offering the Tivo service in the Republic?

Virgin is for UK only, you might be able to fix the dish yourself if it's easy to get at.
Satellite reception isn't like cable tv,the neighbours may be fine but yours isn't.
The old threaten to cancel trick will get someone out anyway.

Even if they do just cancel your account (which has been known to happen) simply sign up again under a new name and get brand new equipment.

Op, you mentioned in another thread that you're on a communal system.
You need to contact the management company and find out who's responsible for the upkeep of the system and get them to look at it for you.

If it's sky then you'll be ok but it could have been a 3rd party installation company, who'll be be needed to be contacted.

It is a communal system. Contacted the management agency and they sent someone to sort the problem out. As it turns out, the signal was too strong and the box couldn't handle such a high frequency.

Problem solved now. Thank you all for the replies.
