firstly before i explain this was a conversation over a few pints last night im not thinking of doing this in any way:rolleyes:
If you took a southern bought an registered car and transferred it onto northern plates but lived in the south and did this purely for the savings in tax/insurance and were caught by customs, have they any power as the car already has its vrt paid??

I've thought of doing that a few times, but its a lot of hassle changing clocks and stuff.

as a Republic resident , you are not entitled to drive a foreign registered car here.

so you would still be liable for a fine from customs:confused:

Fine? They can take the car off you and give you a court date!

forgive my ignorance but what would they charge you with evasion of tax? as the vrt is already paid

Yeah, but anyone at it long term has them registered at an address in the north for insurance, tax etc. SO living down here and driving it, you couldn't be done for not paying VRT. I'm pretty sure the fine you get when the car is lifted is for non payment of VRT.

Apart from the insurance issue, isn't there an admin VRT charge (much the same as the classic car admin charge) ?

    This. That's all, it's illegal.

    Not all.

He can start a company in NI, register the car in company name, and drive it here absolutely legally.

    No doubt.
Hardly a feasible idea though is it :)
If the car is registered to a company that he owns it's a benefit in kind to him, also a company needs a bank account (in the ROI) anyway. What sort of company would a PAYE worker employed in the ROI register in the North? etc etc etc etc etc :pac:

Staring a company up North and doing UK tax returns, paying an accountant, etc, would surely offset any potential motor tax savings?

I worked for a Northern Company for 10 months on a UK registered car down here in Cork. Used to get pulled by the Gards on a fortnightly basis. You might as well have a big flashing arrow on your roof pointing down towards you.
