    Escape From New York

That was a futuristic sci-fi post-apocalyptic about a prisoner who was forced to find the President or he would be killed.

That is NOT a hired gun mercenary movie!!!!!

I think I should explain what a mercenary is:
    mer·ce·nar·y (mûrs-nr)
    adj.
    1. Motivated solely by a desire for monetary or material gain.
    2. Hired for service in a foreign army.
    n. pl. mer·ce·nar·ies
    1. One who serves or works merely for monetary gain; a hireling.
    2. A professional soldier hired for service in a foreign army.
[Middle English mercenarie, a mercenary, from Old French mercenaire, from Latin mercnnrius, from mercs, wages, price.]
    merce·nari·ly adv.
    merce·nari·ness n.

He was offered a pardon too, which is still being paid, and he's an ex special forces commander who is also a war hero so he is a mercanary too. So technically it is a mercenary on a mission movie. And why do you require such stringent specificity? Escape form New York is a great film.

A more contemporary gun for hire that stands out in my mind is Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. Definitely the most profound in recent time, IMHO :).

You can't do better than "The Three Amigos". Ruthless killers hired by Mexican villagers to take on the "infamous" tyrant El Guapo.

    He's not soldier. He's a hitman. A mercenary is a soldier.

That's a comedy Western. It's not a war movie about mercenaries.

The Mercenary with Franco Nero, a great spaghetti western. If you're not ready to buy, get ready to die.

Tarantino re-uses the music from this in lieu of an original idea.

In the Army Now, Paulie Shore was a mercenary in that film.
