See letter of the day in the Indo, some genius reckons runners and walkers should pay a tax for our running!! Dunno how to create a link to the article, but page 30 of todays Irish Independent.

I read that article this morning, bizarre stuff

Basically, runners should not be enjoying themselves so much doing something that is free. Make them pay. It's not fair Joe.

    Letter of the day :pac:

Hmmm Runners? Race entry fees? club Membership? Physio bills? Sports massages?

Seems like there are already quite a few "hidden taxes" within running already:D

Letter served its purpose though get people talking about the Indo and to increase publicity/viewership so I can see why it was put in

not only must pay for a driving licence, but also have to pay an increasingly hefty annual road tax

What is this road tax they speak of?

Clearly a wind up. Not even a funny one.

He could have thought of a better name surely?

    Ivor Shorts.

The trolling started off quite well, but he got a bit lost with the point in the middle with talking about street art.

They should be more worried about mobile cranes using our roads, they can run 12 tons per axle which is the maximum allowed, pay 250 on motor tax and use green diesel. They inflict a lot more wear and tear on the roads than cars, trucks or joggers

Ivor did at least recognise that there is a difference between "runners" and "joggers".

I read it as a attempt at satire with all the stealth taxes we're been hit with, not a great effort mind you:(

I thought so too, but a google revealed he is a serial letter writer to the Indo. Years ago those serial cranks used to bring a bit of humour or wit: both sadly lacking from this letter, which is all over the place, and tries to hit too many targets. A man named Shorts should know that brevity is the soul of wit.

In fairness to the author I didn't think it could have been read any differently, could have shortened it a bit though as already pointed out.

If anyone read the below part and did not realise it was (bad) satire, you are in trouble!
Moreover, many pavements also feature the added attraction of ancient, broken, glued-together manhole covers; and if you do fall into one you stand a fair chance of entering a portal that ends up in Manhattan in the head of the movie actor John Malkovich.

Reminded me of why I stopped reading the Indo. Pages filled with all kinds of rubbish
