Cam's Classics: Week 4 - The Tuck Rule Game

    Week 4:

    raiders-80x80.png150px-American_Football_Conference_logo.svg.png100px-New_England_Patriots_logo.svg.png

    2002 AFC Divisional Playoff
    (a.k.a The Tuck Rule Game)

Oakland Raiders @ New England Patriots

    Background
    Two simple words.

    Tuck. Rule.

Once upon a time, they were words buried deep within the NFL's official rules of the game, nothing but an obscure law that you really only knew of if you had too much time on your hands.

Now, they are words that are strong enough to make any Oakland Raiders fan sick to their stomach, and enough to make any Patriots fan want to change the subject.

This week I'm happy to bring you a game that I'm sure many of you have been seeking the full broadcast of online. Whereas in weeks 1 to 3 we have featured high scoring college shootouts, this week we feature a defensive slugfest in blizzard, arctic-like conditions that can only be found in Boston in January.

The Raiders, sitting on 10-6 record and a wildcard win over the Jets, travelled to a snowed under Foxboro stadium (incidentally, the last NFL game to take place at the stadium) to take on an 11-5 Patriots, who had been guided to the playoffs thanks to second year QB Tom Brady having stepped in for an injured Drew Bledsoe in Week 2.

This game was not pretty. The first half may have been one of the ugliest in playoff history, but the infamy and almost hypnotising conditions make this game a classic. Plus, it's the reason every NFL fan is now aware of two little words they really have no need to know of....

    Tuck. Rule.

Note: This video begins being broadcast in German, but the commentary begins in English. Don't worry. For a bonus video, you can find the segment of this game that feature on the 2001 America's Game here for a great perspective on it and some more information. As always with America's Game, the presentation is astounding (this game begins at 3:48 in the linked video).

    Thanks Cam.

Really looking forward to watching this tonight.

The rule has never been used before, and never been used since. Greatest robbery in the history of the NFL.

Seriously dude. You're first NFL classic is this? Really? I said before - Colts Pats '06/'07 AFC championship ;)

Don't worry, that game will feature. But this is the most infamous game in NFL Playoff history - it was always gonna be one of the first ones posted! :)

In fairness, it's a savage game. And any doubters of Adam V's claim for Canton... sit back and swallow your pride.

The Tuck Rule was just the Patriots revenge for that robbery in 1976.

First game of football I ever watched in full. A miracle the officials called what they did but I'm not complaining.

Just finished watching it. Really enjoyed it, thanks again for posting Cam.

Brady was as clutch 10 years ago as he is today. That was such a great kick by Viniateri to tie as well. It's strange how things work out as the Patriots were a correct call away from going out, but they get the luck here and end up Super Bowl champions!

No idea how the referee managed to come up with that decision mind, but a very enjoyable game.

I look forward to next weeks instalment of Cam's Classics :)

According to Wiki it has been used a few times since:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuck_rule
The tuck rule also was enforced in the NFL playoff game on January 9, 2011 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens. After this game, Mike Pereira, the former NFL vice-president for officiating, stated that he was no longer in support of the tuck rule.[5]

The tuck rule was also enforced on October 2nd, 2011 during a game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. When the Bengals Andy Dalton was tackled by two Bills defenders and the ball was returned for a touchdown by the Bills Bryan Scott. After reviewing the play, the officials ruled that Andy Dalton was tucking the ball, reversing the touchdown and giving the Bengals control of the ball.

The tuck rule was also enforced on October 30, 2011 during a game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Cincinnati Bengals. Andy Dalton started into his throwing motion but decided not to throw the pass. The ball came out of his hand and traveled backwards striking the umpire. Dalton fell on the ball at the one yard line but it was later ruled an incomplete pass, though the call was questionable because the "pass" appeared to travel backwards, in which case it should have been spotted at the one yard line

The Ed Hochuli game between Denver and San Diego 3 years ago was a prime example of the tuck rule being enforced terribly, but I wasn't complaining at the time...

Definitely. As Cam says, the first half is ugly. The ball is punted 12 times in the first 2 quarters!

Showing dedication to the cause here - can't find next week's classic on youtube, so going to upload it myself! :pac:

    Thoroughly enjoyed that, Cam.

    Many thanks.

Been uploading next week's game since half 12 last night.

    It's only at 52%.

Uploading 2.5gb to youtube is not something I'll be doing again. During that time, my computer has been as responsive as me for the first hour after waking up every morning :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,299 ✭✭✭spiralism

Showing great dedication to us on the AF forum though... we're all very touched! :D

bit of luck its one of the 2 SBs the rams were in at the start of the 2000s... two absolutely fcuking unreal games based on their rep and i never got the chance to see them.

Just watched from Oakland's first scoring drive the rest of the way through... absolutely epic encounter, shame bits were left out at the end on the vid though like the coin toss and skipping between downs quickly...unreal stuff though, was class watching the birth of a legend!

There's a very nice free software called VirtualDub, with which you can quite easily compress video files to more manageable sizes.

I know it's not much help now, but it may be worth a look for future games.

Feel free to PM me if you've any questions about it.

(presumptuously and selfishly assumes that you will continue with this :D)

Nice one man, I'm going to check that out here. I've got well over 100gb of games downloaded, and a good few games that would make great additions to this series that aren't already up on YouTube. Will definitely help me if it makes uploads more manageable.

I just followed the method in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xgm85-wzSc

Except I didn't bother with a HD filter.

Got a video of 240mb down to 150mb.

LOL - Tuck rule involved in the texans game tonight -
looks like an obvious incomplete pass to me but officials ruled fumble

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,658 ✭✭✭✭Peyton Manning

That wasn't the tuck rule dude, tuck rule is only applied when the QB aborts the pass or decides to hold onto it with a pump fake, hence the word "tuck".

ah - didn't understand it fully, get it now. bull call from the officials anywho.

No it wasn't, although that whole rule is now been called the tuck rule since 2002 there is 2 parts to the rule:
NFL Rule 3, Section 22, Article 2, Note 2. When [an offensive] player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his arm starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body. Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble

I'm really not looking forward to the next installment of this.

Seeing 'Peytons Classics' as a thread title just wont have the same ring to it...

Since it's Peyton's classics, you'd think the AFC Championship game between the Pats and Colts would be a cert :p:D

Cracking game for completely different reasons. Had seen the highlights on America's Game a good while back but great to see the full thing. Hard to believe that was the Raiders last winning season until possibly this year.

    Good man Peyton!

I was looking forward to watching this Cam after watching the other 2 NFL ones, but apparently it's private. How do I watch it?

You're giving me ideas here Paully! :P

Matthew, that video was not my own one, I've only started uploading my own recently so I guess the guy I used to get them off has made his private. I'll re-upload this one, hopefully by next weekend although I have another game to get up too!
