Ford Mondeo Clutch/flywheel problems.

I've a ford Mondeo 2.0 tddi 01 which has a rather unusual problem where every now and then won't go into gear.

I stop the engine, select gear and restart it, jolting away and the car will take off and return to normal and drive perfectly for miles before it happens again.
There are no noises to suggest the dmf is on the way out or any roughness/vibration either.

When this problem occurs, the clutch pedal feels normal and there are no signs of leaking fluid on the underside to suggest a leaking slave cylinder.

What could it be? Could the master cylinder be faulty or could it be to do with the dmf???

Probably the flywheel. I have never had to change a clutch master cylinder on one. The most common cause of what you describe is when the flywheel gets really bad the movement in the DMF is so excessive that the floating part of the flywheel can get stuck in a certain position which makes it difficult for the clutch to clear so you can engage gear.

This is also a problem with the TDCi engines isn't it? I am thinking of buying an 07 and this was one of the issues i cam across. I hear its a pain to fix also? Aanyone know if the problem is solved on the 07 onwards model?? Also considering this model

Yes it is a problem with all the Mondeos.

The problem is worse if anything with the newer model. The parts are also more expensive than the old model unfortunately.

To be fair it is not just a Ford problem it is common to all modern diesels. But the 07-> Mondeo is a particularly expensive one to do. The job costs almost twice as much as with a 1.9TDI Passat of the same year, for example.

Thanks for that - roughly how much are they to fix? I read that some people suggest getting them replaced with another dual mass flywheel, while others say fixed but it'll vibrate more:confused:.

Have a petrol mondeo and have had no problems with it but i've changed jobs that will involce a much longer commute so i'm thinking of Diesel - think i'll stay with Mondeo - its a solid car thats good to drive and plenty of room in it for me (over 6'5").

I have a 02 Tddi and i had the same problem 2 years ago, it's the Dual Mass Flywheel... I had to get a new clutch and a solid type flywheel put into it. It's a huge problem with them as the Dual Mass type just doesnt work properly with the engine design. Cost me €680 for all parts and labour

€680 - wow thats pricey! I suppose the best bet so will be to try buy a car with it already done. the service history should show that up i assume. Thanks for the responses

It was actually cheap compared to most prices I got from people. Ford wanted €1100, a few smaller garages wanted around €800-€900... I got it done in Bohernabreena Gearbox

€680 is extremely cheap. We charge €950.

Bottom line so - get a mondeo with it done already and drive it into the ground.

Or get it done in your car and not have to fork out for a new one... unless you were planning on getting a new car already.... I'm actually selling my one :D

My ones a petrol so no issues there (hopefully it'll stay like that). Was thinking of 06 - 08 (02 wouldn't be much of a jump in terms of years considering my ones an 01) as can't afford anything newer.

Anything else to be aware of with these models in diesel?

Only other problem I had with mine was the power steering pump went at 125k miles. But thats just wear and tear, they can go at anytime... Other than those 2 problems she's been a fine motor :)

Duel-mass flywheel(as said above) or clutch sticking. If its the flywheel when getting the job done, make sure you get a clutch and release bearing if they look even slightly dodgy.
Common problem with those, big job as well:(

DMF problem alrite, effects all modern diesels unfortunatly, best thing to do is when buying one try and knock down price as much as possible just in case it needs one, then replace it with a solid flywheel conversion so problem wont happen again :)
