days trial unpaid

I was just wondering if anyone can help me out and tell me where i stand. I recently got called for an apprenticeship in a partically up market barbers, i was told to come in and do a days trial and then i would be told wether i got the job or not.

I went in for it anyway and worked a full day in one of their busiest stores. i worked from 9 to half 6 with a half an hour break and then got sent on my way without a clue of how they thought i performed or a penny in my pocket.

I was told the owner would contact me two days later but a week later still no word, i've since taken another job and have no interest in working for a company thats so unorganised and treat their staff so badly but basically I would like to know am i entitled to be paid for the full days slave labour which i was subjected to because i really do feel that he had no interest in taking on an apprentice and just used me because he was short staffed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sent a letter to the owner seeking a days wages. If you do not get paid, complain to a Rights Commissioner.

only problem there is that you agreed to come in and work for "trial" .... without pay.

if you are seeking money from them now - then you have to prove they had no intention of hiring you from the start - which is hard to prove.

Best thing to do is put it down as a life experience and move on ..... lesson learned and next time you dictate when you work for free....if someone suggests you come in for a trial ... say you are unavailable on the day they request (you could be booked with personal clients or have relations visit or have other interviews) and then you choose a day you want (assuming you want to do a trial)

There was no mention of the trial being unpaid. There is a presumption that it would be paid.
