The million dollar Question!!

hi, i know this is the million dollar question but, what scope would you put on a .243! The rifle has 30mm mounts on it.

I'm after a new scope (i think!) and was leaning towards a hawke endurance 3 -12 x 50. I was doing a little bit of homework on them and on a few sites it comes up as a air rifle sight. On the deben book it says "recoil tested on the most powerfull rifles"! Looking for a wee bit of feed back on this.

The budget is tight as the world may be heading into recession again but i think i might struggle to scrape up about 300. Maybe this isn't enough??

The perfect scope has to last the test of time! Any info would be great thanks.

oh one last bit. This isn't a fourm to flog your old shot out sight, not interested!! CHEERS LADS:)

Regardless of age, if the scope is of any quality it won't be "shot out" unless it was badly abused.

With a budget of €300 you'd be far better off buying a good second hand scope. 30mm tubes are generally more expensive than inch tubes, would you consider changing your mounts?

Get a Hawke, crap optics, crap workmanship, crap quality and when you sell it again you get nothing for it.
or buy a used or even well used quality European scope. If you choose wisely you will sell it again at the same price after years of pleasure.
Look out for a 6x42 or 8x56 (S&B, Zeiss, Kahles, Kaps,Swarovski) fixed scope.

i agree with edi here. if you buy a good quality second hand scope any of the makes mentioned above you will never look back.

however i have owned and still have several hawke scopes and they are great value for money and the never let me down. i had a sidewinder 30, 6-24x56 on my .223 and it was excellent.

if you get the opportunity to pick up a good second hand scope take it even if it means you have to stretch your budget a bit;)

Thanks for all the comments lads. So you mantain a second hand scope would be the better option? oh and as far the mounts go i had 25mm mounts on my .204 and i changed the scope that happened to have 30mm mounts on it and the difference was a lot so i think i'll try stick to the 30.

If i was to look for a second hand scope where would i go?? if anyone as any offers pm me with full details and it might try make my mind up.

If i knew what i was after it would be on the top of my santa list;)

3/12x50 is what Accruacy Intl and the late Malcom Cooper recomended for .243.So thats good enough for me.I have a Richter Optics 3/9x40 illuminated on mine, and it is good enough for what I want.Ok a S&B in the same would be nice, but cutting cloth according to ones means is the watchword of the day.Indeed keep an eye von SH for a quality scope, but in the meantime a 80/100 euro scope will still work, just dont expect the same quality workmanship.Wether it is a questrion of going shooting with a average scope and putting in trigger time,or sitting at home waiting for the right scope...?:pac:

    I have a 3-9x40 Bushnell Elite 4200.
I bought it brand new, for $240 back a few years, its worked well for me, and has stood up to a lot of rain Japanese made as well.
If I had a spare few hundred I would like a Euro scope maybe 3-12x50/56.
But at the moment I don't have the bucks spare.
I have no complaints about Bushnell, for the money they are a fine scope.
