I qualified as a nurse last November and I have been trying to get a job ever since with no luck! I got offered a job in the uk about 3 months ago to start in January and I was delighted. Employer has now retracted offer of employment. I've lost all hope! Any nurses on here with any advice would be greatly appreciated. Should I just start looking for jobs as a care assistant? I feel my chances of getting nursing job are hopeless at this stage.

More suited to Work & Jobs than Leaving Cert.

This sounds harsh ... but in light of the current situation here I think it's valid:

Emigrate. You're far more likely to get a UK job if you're living there.

And yes, of course you should be taking temp care assistant jobs, or any other temp jobs you can get, along the wayy.

Why don't you try for a graduate nurse post in Australia. I know it's a long way from home, but you'll get great experience and can come home in a few years with good postgrad experience, courses under your belt, and the moratorium will hopefully be over. Canada is also a great place to begin nursing.

If you don't want to travel so far send CV's to as many NHS trusts as possible. Someone will have a job for you. A tip- if you have a chosen specialty, address your CV to the Matron, or Nurse Manager of the department. Google the chosen hospitals and you'll get information on unit managers. If you have no preference where you work, just send CV to Human Resouces departments of the chosen Trusts.

Not sure how it works in Ireland, but if you move to the UK you can register with an agency and get temp jobs as a Staff Nurse (obviously, once your registered with NMC). Don't worry about the amount of experience you have, that's taken into account when your offered assignments.

You could try World of Nursing, the INMO magazine.

It will be hard for you to get a Care Assistant job as they have to pay you a nurses rate if you have a pin number, have you tried nursing homes I know a few looking for nurses in Cork if you pm, a number of nurses in private nursing homes are going to the HSE so its worth a shot, even if its just for a year to build up experience, my mum runs a nursing home and 5 of her 9 nurses are going to the HSE/ Australia and she is finding it so hard to fill their positions and she has a very good nursing home.
