Of the two above, the Meriva hands down

It would be the opel for me also

What possible criteria left you with those 2 yokes to choose from?

I knew my choices would be mocked lol!! But I like both... need room for lugging home stuff from Ikea etc along with a couple of 12 year olds, (& better not forget the smelly dog!) so I am leaning towards the Opel too..
Wish i had another 2.5k to put with it and I might go for something else :(

The only reason the Meriva wins is because the megane is diabolical.

With your budget and the fact that you'll go 1.6, there are lots of options.

It would be the Meriva for me purely because that Megane looks like crap. I really don't like either tbh and as Colm said with a budget of €2.5k and you wanting a 1.6 there are lots of cars to choose from..

Buy the Megane and you're married to it , very few buyers for a s/h megane. Go for the Opel , ;)

Is it me or is the back of that Opel a different colour to the front?

This is a long way ahead of the two mentioned. I had a 3dr one, absolutely bulletproof.

Jazuz, don't touch a Renault Megane from that era, been there and took a long time to get out, serious build quality issues, you name it and it can go wrong on that car

These are just off the top of my head, but they might be worth looking into. You don't have young kids that you need to lift in and out, so the taller height of an SUV might not be necessary.

    Thanks all for your input!
Im glad you have all said to stay away from the Megane & i dont want to go over 1.6 for car-tax price reasons..
I had a 1999 A140 so you get used to being high on the road which is why i like the Meriva..

Ive just spotted this from one of the links & my dad keeps telling me to buy an Almera so maybe ill go take a look tomorrow before i decide!! Ill be here till next December

The difference in motor tax between a 1.6 and a 2.0 is most likely going to be a very, very small percentage of your motoring bill.
