XBox 360 As Stand-Alone (Not Networked) Media Centre?

Hi, mods feel free to move to X360 forum, though I think my question has a better chance of getting qualified answers on this HTPC forum.

I guess I have two questions here:

    1. I currently have a 500gb WD MyBook HDD permanently connected to my X360. It has all my music & some videos on it, and I can watch or listen as I please and it's all working fine.

But I fancy a nicer interface like XBMC. Is it possible to use XBMC (or any other media management interface) on the X360 without having anything networked? I don't want to stream or download - just have my own content on the HDD connected to the X360 to access whenever I want.

FWIW, my system is Denon AVR-2309, QAcoustics speakers, Pan TH-50PZ80, X360, PS3, Wii, Denon DVD-1740, Humax Foxsat HDR320 - nothing is networked, and I don't want anything to be networked, though obviously the X360 & PS3 do connect to the net.

    2. (I'm not sure of Boards' policy on discussing this, so mods feel free to delete this part of this post if necessary) I want to copy my DVD collection to the WD HDD, so I can watch them without using my DVDs.

These are official DVDs I've bought over the years, and would like to save from the hands of my kids. I have no intent for anything other than watching them at home.

We have a Harmony One remote, so it's easy for the kids to be able to just select movies from the WD HDD via X360 and simply play them.

I'd like to keep the exact same quality as if I was playing the DVD - same video quality and same audio, whether it's simple stereo or any of the Dolby surround types.

Can anyone advise on these queries?

    Thanks for any replies,

    Mark
