I just posted this in the business section and then thought mabey it should be here in the TAX forum so mods feel free to move or delete it as it is duplicated.

I know if an ROI company orders goods/parts for their business outside of Ireland, they do not have to pay VAT. However if they have the goods delivered to address in UK they do. So here's the thing!
A friend's business has to order alot of specialist parts from the UK, no one here doing them. So they order, pay 0% Vat at purchase point and goods are delivered but carriage costs are mad!
They would be able to use a NI address as a delivery address but then they can't have 0% Vat from get go and would have to pay the 20% VAT in uk.
However the carriage cost saving is still pretty good.
I assume it is somehow possible to claim back VAT paid in another EU country? Or is that possible? I cant seem to find out let alone how! Thanks :)

Assuming you are registered for VAT and would be entitled to a VAT input / refund had you brought the item in Ireland, the short answer is yes.

See this page on the Revenue's website for how to make the claim for a refund and scroll down to the paragraph headed "If your business is established in Ireland:".
