TIGHT OIL STORAGE TANK CAP

Have a new tank now about 2 yrs and the cap is still a nightmare to replace.

There are two little round lugs on the outside of the tank rim and the cap sits down on these with about a 1/4 turn to secure it.

Trying to align the cap up to fit down over these lugs is hell. I've used vaseline on the inside rim of cap which helped a bit last year.

Yesterday went out to check oil and had to prise the cap off and couldn't get it back on, had to leave it on crooked.

I'm thinking of filing the outside sides of the base or rim if you like, is that a good idea.

below is some pic's, the blurred one is the base which kinda has a double rim.

How about marking the cap so you know where the lugs are from the top.
Then screw a piece of timber or metal bar across the top of the cap securing into the rim so you have a decent handle for better purchase.

I got so pissed off with it the other day in the cold I hacksawed the lugs off thinking the cap would then just sit down on it.

Didn't make a damn bit of difference.

Am I right in thinking that the cap doesn't have to be air tight for any reason and just has to keep the rain out!

I can't figure out why the kinda double seal on the base, you can see the groove.

Checked oil the other day but trying to get cap back on was murder even when aligning it up properly it takes a lot of strength to push it down and or twist it though I've cut off the lugs.

Took me about 30 minutes and I don't have the strength any more (arthritis) to wrestle with it and the pressure ain't good for the tank as a whole.

Been using vaseline to lubricate it but not much use, would I be better off with wd 40 or some thing else.

When I get a good day going to trying filing edges down a bit in cap and on tank rim but don't want to over do it.

Yes keeping the rain out is whats required, but tight enough that it wont blow off.

Paring the cap so its a little looser a fit should do the trick

thought that, thanks DGOBS, will pair it down a bit and to make double sure it can't blow off will secure the top and bottom eyelets together with string of small lock.
