Hey a question that I would love the answer too . I always thought that sky or UPC boxes won't work in another persons house., so why do people sell them ? Will they work in another house? While im at it , do these companies know how many boxes you have in your house at any given time???

You can buy an old Sky box, get a new Sky card and match it to your box.

Thats what folk used to do when Sky didn't hand out boxes so easily. They more or less give you a box for nothing now, so I would say that the trade in 2nd hand Sky boxes must be small these days.

Sky boxes work grand and legally for FTA TV anywhere and belong to the seller, so can be legally purchased. Sky hands over ownership when it's installed. As long as you have a dish and LNB pointed for 28.2E satellite and not too far from UK/Ireland.

UPC boxes can't be purchased. They belong forever to UPC. Buying one is "Fencing" stolen goods. Nor does it do much somewhere else without a cable subscription.
