Hi all am new to this so not sure how it works..please be kind!!!

I am a 23 year old female. I'm currently in college in my first year( I have been in college before but had to leave due to financial difficulties but this time around I cant apply for a grant as Ive already received it for previous years study), I'm only in 4 hours a week eventhough my course is a 3 year full time course. I currently reside at home with my parents. My dad was self employed but is now recieveing social welfare and my mum is a dependant on him. I work in a local shop part time, between 9 and 13 hours a week. The problem is i really hate it there the people I work for are ignorant, abrupt and abusive. I'm constantly in tears both on the premisies and off and your work shouldnt be interefering with your personal life. I know peoples attitude is were lucky to have a job but sometimes when it starts to get you really down its not worth it. The problem is I'm not sure if I leave my job will I be entitled to any sort of social welfare at all especially as I'm in college? I've been to my social welfare office who gave me a back to education form but they didnt sound very hopeful. Its not that I'm not willing to work, Ive applied for loads of jobs but am unsuccessful. My parents cant support me at all and I dont expect them to. I really have to get out of my job as I'm only a young girl and shouldnt be constantly down over a part time job which in reality isnt going to be my life long career! If anybody could give me any advice or have been in this situation themselves I would very much appricate it and it would help me so much.

    Cheers in advance:)

Probably better off posting your question in the State Benefits forum.

Is your course part time since your only doing 4hrs? If so that shudnt affect social welfare but if you leave your job of your own choice you'll prob be waiting about 6-8 wks maybe longer to get sorted and you also will go on an age related social payment if you haven't earned €300 pw from your job in the last year! And the payment will be based on your parents earnings since your living at home... Check out welfare.ie for more info. Hope this helps

As your course is full time, you would not be entitled to claim Jobseekers.
