Hi guys there is three different engine types in the diesel, the 2.5, the 2.8 and the 3.2.

Would the 2.5 be the most economical?
I see most second hand models have the 3.2 engine it seems the most popular?

2.8 is the old model. 2.5 is very underpowered

The 2.8 is the old engine but its reliable. I find the 2.5 needs another gear or overdrive as the engine is screaming at 60mph.
The 3.2 is a gulpin on diesel.

    Historically incorrect.

Both were offered side by side.

The 2800 was the basis for the current 3.2.

2800 offered 130bhp while the 2.5 offfered 90 bhp, so yes, the 2.5 was a little sluggish,

    Both damn reliable though...

Think you are wrong there, in the 00 and newer pajero only the 2.5 and 3.2 were options. 3.2 is a more powerful engine with better fuel economy, but the 2.5 is more reliable. As far as another gear, the 2.5 could use one, at 120kph you are at approx 3000 rpm. But that would be considered gen 4 would it not. unless they don't count the 97-99 model as a new gen.

yes the 3.2 would be a better choice. When you test drive it make sure that the 4x4 functions as it should, give it a good long test in 4wd high and 2wd high as the switches in the transfer box give trouble. I just had all 5 changed. Apparently they suffer from moisture inside the transfer box and the switches and servo get corroded. The only way to solve this is to change the oil every year which most people don't do.

I dare say they get little use anyway! Common problem with Tboxes on many 4x4s is seized mechanisms through lack of use, especially on UK imports where the only off roading is bumping over a kerb in Tesco

You are so right there, i put it in 4x4 every couple weeks just to keep everything lubed up, that way there are no surprises when you need it.

What do you mean? The op is looking at the 2003 pajero which has either 2.5 and 3.2 engines, the 2.8 isn't available on it, but was on the previous generation from the early 90s

Technically it was available - but on Asian markets only. It was soon discontinued, but you'll see the odd one pop up on DoneDeal. Always a '99 or '00 plate, and always a Jap import. ;)

I've got the 3.2 auto, and there not as bad on diesel as people think 30mg for normal relaxed driving,

And so far mine has been nice and reliable 290k and still going strong without any work (servicing and front wheel bearing)

The 3.2 manual does need the clutch and fly wheel done every 100,000 miles i've heard, and the front wheel bearing aren't the strongest. But other than that strong yokes
