Hello fluent speakers!

I'm not great at the language but sometimes I use the odd word or phrase around the house.

I've recently started saying "maith agat" rather than the full "Go raibh maith agat" and I was wondering if it still grammatically meant "thanks".

Any information will be appreciated, thanks.

I've never heard anyone say 'maith agat' on it's own, but it's fairly common to hear 'Go raibh míle' just. I speak Ulster Irish but live in Dublin.

I would just say the full thing, but very fast like "Grbh ma'gat"

Really? I never heard that during my 16 years years of gaelscoilíocht. Or anywhere else for that matter! I think it's an OP-ism.

Not all Gaelscoileanna are equal! :pac:

Some of the teachers (cinnirí?) in a Gaeltacht school in north Donegal are often heard to say "go raibh míle Síle", to which the correct response was "go ndeannaí Danny" (pardon the spelling if that's wrong). Think most were from NI, so i suspect that's an Ulster Irish phrase.

Never heard "maith agat" as a shortcut.

Although I hav'nt heard it before, there's nothing wrong with it, and everyone will know what's meant.

I have kids in a Gaelscoil. They definitely didn't get it at home!
