Christmas is coming and my 2 kids (5 and 7) want ds's, I am hearing reports of the 3ds being bad for their eyes after a while, and I know the only thing going for the XL is a larger screen, also cannot find any packages with the XL model, which one?

The XL might be a few quid cheaper, cos its just a big DS. But its still a good console, games look awesome on it. The 3DS is what I'd recommend. It isn't mandatory to play with 3D, and the intensity of it can be turned down, or completely off. It has a few good games now, and its only gonna get better in 2012. And there are a few decent bundles for it as well. And the 3DS can play all the games the DSI XL can.

The DS was released back in 2005 originally, and there's basically no new games coming out for it.

3DS was released this year and plays all DS games. It offers a lot more then the 3D feature (which can be disabled with parental controls), it's the next generation (think PS2 > PS3) and plays all DS games.

The 3DS would be the smart option. :pac:

DSiXL, because quite frankly the 3DS is poo on a stick.

I have the 3DS and also a stick with poo on the end of it. In my experience, the 3DS has a wider variety of games available on it - just about - but is less fun to chase children around with. They are both equally effective at keeping the ladies at bay. On balance I would choose the 3DS.

3DS it does everything the DS does but is a new console. You can turn the 3D off anyway.

The 3DS obviously. It plays 3DS and DS games. You can use parental controls to block the 3D if you are worries about their eyes. And the DS is about to become a dead system.
However, I wouldn't suggest to buy a 3DS now. They're going to release a new model soon.

why do you say they are going to release a new model soon? I know they are releasing new firmware, but do you have info (link) on new model?

I don't think we'll see a new 3DS model till 2013. Nintendo's only just getting off the ground with this one, to release a new one too soon would be a mad move.

Nah, there'll be one next year with a built in second circle pad and better battery in all likelihood.

There's been a lot of these threads lately, and the answer is always going to be this:
If you only intend to play DS games, get a DSiXL
But if you one day would consider buying a 3DS game, then you will need a 3DS.
The 3DS does everything a DSL/i/iXL will do and more.
It comes down to if you want to spend the extra 20 or whatever euro on the chance you'll be using that extra stuff one day.

I don't think so. I think we'll see it at E3, maybe get it for christmas, but more likely 2013(to me)
