Airplay iPhone to ATV2 via wirednetwork

    Hi Lads,

Just wondering if both have to be using the same wifi connection or can the ATV2 be wired?

Also for some reason I don't get the airplay symbol for my photos? It pops up the odd time for music and youtube (very intermittent though) but never for photos.

    How are people finding this??

    Gary

As long as they are on same network then it should not matter if Wifi or ethernet*

*Except if using Eircom Zyxel router as these are known to have issues with airplay/home sharing, where it works over ethernet but not Wifi. I think a config file from eircom can resolve this though

Bingo on the Zyxtel, stupid piece of !;$!;$, any idea where that config file is?

Its a configuration file for router which I think Eircom can email you when you call them.

I think it disables IGMP Snoop and something else, not 100% sure if it actually works

The main issue is bonjour. Alot of non apple routers call this protocol multicast dns. I found that my d link dsl 2740r worked fine when I had the atv2 connected via powerline with AirPlay. However, it struggled with bonjour sleep protocol and when using just my wireless network it was forever not finding my mac library after sleep although AirPlay was fine. I now use an airport extreme and airPlay and AirPrint etc are all fine. It's an expensive solution though

Ya just looking there looks like the airport extreme takes DSL, didn't know that, savage!!! Might try and pick up a second hand one of those and burn my eircom router.

The extreme is just a router. You use the Eircom box as a modem. Switch off its wireless. Connect it to the extreme and let the extreme run the wifi LAN. The airport express does the same and is cheaper. It is not dual channel but unless you use loads of devices that are wireless g and wireless n it won't matter.

Huh? So the airport extreme doesn't convert the DSL line in? You need the eircom box? I just don't want to have a heap of things plugged in, I already have a 24 port switch was hoping for just a dsl wifi router.

I am afraid that that is the case. I agree with you that it would be better to have just one box. I ended up using powerline to send the dsl signal over my electric main so that I could hide all the boxes.

Right so I might be better off going with an all in one? Something that will convert the DSL to LAN, anyone any recommendations??

Apparently linksys routers work well with AirPlay etc but I couldn't guarantee it. My netgear router modem couldn't handle Vodafone daily ip renewal without freezing so I bought a d link 2740r. That worked with the dsl signal but couldn't handle bonjour sleep protocol properly. The apple support forums have pages and pages of people with this problem and various routers. Why not keep your Eircom modem and buy an airport express? It doesn't take up much more room than a plug.

Ya in the utility room closet at the moment theres:

    Eircom Router
    24 port Switch
    NAS

I was hoping not to get another thing that needs a power source but this isn't looking great.

There's a lad on adverts selling an asus wireless n so might see about how that works with airplay.

It would be great to get some kind of DSL to ethernet adapter and just use the express.

    Nothing is ever straight forward.

With a 24 port switch, I'm guessing that your network is a bit bigger than would be serviced by an Airport Express anyway. I must admit that the tech equipment required to use all the new 'essential functionality' would put NASA in the moon landings to shame. Still, it's good fun trying to get it all to work.
