Firstly apologies if this has been asked before/posted in the wrong place.

I was just wondering if anyone has an idea of what size an normal half hour program recorded from saorview is?
Im looking at adding flash memory to a box I am buying as a present for Christmas and I want to make sure I have enough space. I thought 8gb might be enough but would like to be sure.

    Thanks!

Impossible to say as it's statistically multiplexed variable bit rate.
HD is about x4 SD bit rate.

8G should be OK for one 1/2 hour. But might not be enough for an HD sports event or HD Film.

The live signal is recorded "as is".

32G would be minimum and decent PVRs use 320G to 1T (1000 GByte)

    Have a look here

You'll need high speed flash memory to cope with RTE Two (HD). Class 10 ideally.

As Watty says, the filesize isn't fixed, but from my tests, roughly 1gB per hour for SD channnels, eg RTE One, around 3gB per hour for HD.

    Thanks for the replies.
I have a good idea now of what kind of size and speed I will need for day to day use.
