    Hi guys

Just looking to find out if anybody is having similiar problems I have a 2006 1.4 Astra 70000km. I am having to put oil in at a high rate 1lt for 800-1000km. Opel Say 0.8L-1000km so going by what they say it's high. Thing is there are no visible signs of leak or smoke from burning oil.
The car is due for an NCT early next year and i'm wondering will it fail on emissions. Is there no visible smoke because the CAT converter is filtering it out.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Be sure to put in the correct spec oil unless you feel like shelling out for a new timing chain :)

The cat doesn't filter smoke out so if you where burning oil badly you'd see it.

Have you checked for smoke when starting from cold?

my astra likes oil aswel. about the same as yours, litre per 1000kms

That's a lot of oil for 1000km. I only put at the most 500ml between services (15k km) on a diesel. Often it's only 200 ml.

    ...............litre per 1000kms

That's a litre of oil for every two tanks of fuel (ish).

I've already replaced the chain. I only bought the car last Feb garage gone bust so had to fork out for the chain. I'll check to see if there us any smoke from cold. Just want to get it passed the nct and put up with it till next Aug and sell it as i'm going away for a year.

well my astra does about 550kms to a tank to eh...youre wrong there kiddo!

but yeah when you put it like that it does seem a bit! for my last 2 cars i always kept 5 litres to spare until the next oil change and always had enough and some left to use it for changing the oil....this astra takes 4.7 litres to fill and theres about 3litres gone from this 5l tank. does fully synth burn quicker?

Anyone got any suggestions of using maybe a thicker oil? Correct roverjames!! Filled it with oil two weeks ago and now it's down to Min mark.

Jese, my diesel astra hasn't used a drop of oil in 9,000kms!

............ does fully synth burn quicker?

Well, there's fully syn in the ZT and it doesn't burn much, maybe 2/3l over 10,000 miles. Fully syn is generally less viscous so more conducive to being used but not in a drastic fashion, the Astra isn't using oil because it's fully syn.

I doubt it's anything to worry about, the non oil burning cars of the 90s seem to be a thing of the past in many cases.

    Don't do that.

possibly a new set of spark plugs? it does say in the manual somewhere, something along the lines of......excessive throttle use will cause your car to consume excessive oil.......:o:D

possibly a new set of spark plugs?.........

Doubt it again to be honest.
Although if they are the 60k mile ones and the factory ones are still in there it may be no harm to change them, wouldn't effect the oil consumption though me thinks.

it doesnt mention any spark plug change in the service history. its on 63k kms atm

It might only burn it when you are driving hard as Ardennes mentioned, so you won't be seeing it then :)

It may still be getting burned, just not to the extent that you notice smoke driving along. Thats why on cold start up is when you will always notice smoke if there is any.

Have you checked your coolant level and condition?

Coolant level is fine. What do you mean by condition?Oil in the coolant?

Yeah, any discolouration of the coolant or white build up under the oil cap?

The Coolant looks fine no discolouration. Awhile ago when i was adding oil there was a very small amount of white on the threads of the filler cap but I looked it up at the time and ppl said it was likely condensation.

Next time service it with a fully synthetic, quality oil. I have 1994 corolla that was always burning oil and decided to fill it with quality synthetic - did not take a drop in 5k miles. I would suggest go for Motul (GM Specific LL A/B 025 5w-30) or Millers XF Longlife C3. You would be surprised what difference it makes. And no do not put oil that is too thick/viscous - you will wreck the engine in long run, stick to 5w-30.
