Guys, looked through the previous threads on this and followed through the steps on how to find out how much ram i have got which is starting from the top it says,480mb of ram>drive c.partition>space available 53662mb>initial size 336>maximum 672>total minimum2mb recomended 718mb>currently allocated 336mb.
    system philips IQon
    xp home edition 2002
    amd sempron(tm)2800+
    2.00ghz 480mb of ram
We dont have anything running it down to my knowledge and dont use it for gaming or anything else and i am nearly sure the wife said yer man in the shop said he boosted the memory on it when it was in the shop.

There very low specs, you might want to get more RAM and a bigger hardrive. Todays applications are designed to run on higher specs than that.

Virtual memory is the page file. Try up the pagefile and see what happens.

Thanks Karl, would you have a ballpark for what a shop would charge me for this or would i be better of trying to buy it on line and getting a "johnnie" up the road who says he knows everything about computers to install it.

Installing extra ram is as simple as opening the computer and plugging it in. 20 quids worth of RAM should sort you out. Jonnie down the road should be well able for it. You should see a big improvement in the speed of the computer.

Thanks Khannie, any pointers to anything that would be compatible for my pc on the web as i am moronic when it comes down to this stuff and is there anything else "johnnie"could update when he is in there while he is at it.

There's a good tool here. Should help you identify what you need. I would recommend getting probably 2GB of RAM.

a rule of thumb when it comes to virtual memory sizes

less than 1gb physical ram set it to 2.5 times your physical ram amount

more than 1gb physical ram set it to 1.5 times your physical ram amount.

but yes adding at least 2gb ram for xp is the best option

try this website, never used them but have seen them recommended a bit, simple enough to find ram for you machine. and once you find it it should (if our machine is on there radar) tell you the max ram it can take and how many slots in total you have to input ram.

    http://www.crucial.com/

Edit: with 480mb of ram id assume youve only one of two slots filled, if its a laptop

it's not a laptop, philips iqons were desktops

first try increasing your page file in control panel, google will help you find quidance on howto do that if you dare to search for it

if that doesn't help then go to adverts and find a used stick of DDR1 ram, you can ask on the ads is it ddr1 and the seller should be helpful enough

Increased the page file to 700 in both boxes, doesnt seem to be any problems with it so far.

How did you get on with the Crucial memory scanner tool?

Once you use that tool to find the type of RAM you need (it will be something like PC2700 DDR DIMM - just note down all the details of the RAM that the crucial tool tells you to buy)... you might find some for sale cheap on adverts.ie or second hand on ebay.

Is the machine about 4/5 years old? It can be a little awkward to find second hand RAM for a machine that age, but once you find it, it'll be cheap. Nice and easy to install, give it a shot yourself.

www.memoryc.ie has all sorts of older DDR, DDR2, Rambus RAM even! But yeah expect to pay through the roof for DDR or below RAM, personally I would get a new machine rather than investing into a Sempron/Celeron with that spec, the CPU will be a huge bottleneck for OP, RAM will help, but the machine will likely still be slowish
