Looking for some quick info about references:

A friend of mine has been off work sick for a number of months and has now been offered another job.

Question is about the reference from the existing company...are they allowed to mention that my friend has been off sick or is currently off sick?

company is a large international financials company?

A company is allowed give a negative reference if they can back that up. However, I don't know if there could be privacy issues at play here because it's sort of personal information.

They might be able to say that there has been a history of absenteeism and not elaborate on it.
