Corolla Clutch 1.4

I won a corolla 1.4 05 model, problem with it is that when I leave it uphill parked with no handbrake in first gear it will roll stop and roll again is this my clutch gone ? I had the gearbox recently replaced and the said the clutch was fine but however the second gearbox started leaking and a lot of transmission fluid went out... The car selects gears fine drives fine, however I noticed that the clutch bite is a bit higher then what it used to be.... the car vibrates a little and makes like a thumping noise but I was told thats a complete different issue that my rear gear box mount is gone and thats why it makes a knocking noise when I jam on the gas.... I was told also that the clutch works on some hydrolic principal and the fluid is gone and therefore its slippin a bit... Thoughts on this ? Anyone have similar issue or know what it could be ?

    Congratulations!! ( I presume you meant "own" :-) )

Your description of the car rolling and then rolling again when parked is pretty normal. I am assuming that the hill is somewhat steep. If its just a gentle incline, it could be a sign og the engine being low on compression. Assuming that the hill is reasonably steep, it's merely a sign of the engine being turned until there is sufficient compression to hold the car, then this compression leaks off and the car can roll again and so the process repeats.

You have a hydraulic activated clutch on that car. Check the level. AFAIR it's beside the brake fluid reservoir though some toyotas of that era share the one reservoiir for brake and clutch.

Hehe yeah I meant to say own dont know where "won" came from.... Hmm I will check that... I thought it would have been shared with the tranny fluid....

Your problem has a very cheap fix though....use the handbrake when parking on a hill!

I am not worried about, I am more worried that it could be the clutch...

    It's not!

If your clutch was that worn you wouldn't even be able to drive it onto the hill!
Clutches don't go like that, the first sign of a clutch going is the car will suddenly start to rev higher without going faster.
Use the handbrake on a hill.all the time when parked.

But it doesn't make any sense, you are trying to test it by doing something that the clutch has nothing to do with, holding the car on a hill when parked.

I don't get how you would have even noticed it was doing that on a hill? Do you never use the handbrake when parking or something?

If the clutch was slipping/failing, as said above, when you try to accelerate when driving, especially under load(up a hill or at higher speed) the revs will rise but the the will not accelerate.

I understand that, but the thing is before this car I had a 1.9 TDI 03 Passat and I parked it on the same hill because my handbrake was not working on it I used to leave it in first gear and would not buldge :S...

Diesels have much higher compression then petrols, so the engine can hold the car much better then a petrol. It still has very little to do with the clutch.

Spot on but still, no car should be parked even on level ground without the handbrake on. Even in a new diesel engine, the compression will eventually leak off and the car can roll forward or backward a bit in the fashion the OP described in post 1.

Oh absolutely, but the OP seems determined to try it.

I just confused how he noticed this when the the corolla's handbrake works, I mean, putting the handbrake on when you park is an instinctive action, like indicating when turning.....or should be at least to any driver I'd have thought.

No need for slating, I always put my handbrake on when it is parked on a hill. Usually when I am coming to a stop always I do is put it into first, release the clutch and then pull up the handbrake. You always get the car to roll down a bit on the hill by a small buldge but the corolla kept going and going. Yeah I was determined to try it because the mechanic told me leave it on the hill with the clutch up and see if it keeps going, he said it could be most likely the low compression or the clutch. So he told me put the handbrake up, put it into 5th gear rev it and see if it stalls, but it took a while to stall because the clutch was not catching. Anyway I brought it to the garage the clutch is in bits.

Cheers for the help anyway :)

Did you see the clutch? You said the car was driving normally otherwise earlier in the thread, If the clutch slipping was causing the issue on a hill then there is no way possible that the car would have been driving normally.

OP, you have likely fried your perfectly good clutch!
You don't test the clutch with the handbrake on.
The car will stall in 1st gear if the HB is on.
