Washing machine rinses - how many??

Just moved into a new house, well actually it's an old house and so it the washing machine. It's a big top loader/american style type of machine and is such an old model that there is no comartment for fabric conditioner!

So I put on a wash the other day and waited for the second rinse stage to open up the top and lash in the Lenor.... but it gave one rinse, spun and that was it! One rinse!!! The outlet pipe drains into a big sink so I could see the water being pumped out and it was very grey. I know most of it is spun out of the clothes but there must be some detergent residue left in the fabric.

I've never paid much attention to how many rinses a machine does so is one the norm?

on some old toppies then yes, tell your ll that its not rinsing and causing a rash, any enginee out will right it off.

Thanks, will be on to him today... he kind of said about the washing machine that it was old but worked and any problems with it to let him know. I just wanted to be sure that 1 rinse was not the norm!

At the moment I'm waiting for the wash to finish, then setting the dial back to rinse and turning it on again. Not very energy efficient I'm sure. :(
