What happened to the punt?

Not sure whether this is the right place to post this, feel free to move it on but... ... when we got the euro and the banks and the government took the punt out of circulation, what actually happened to all the notes and coins? Were they melted down? Are they in storage somewhere?

Destroyed probably. Metals sold on the commodity markets. They weren't worth anything as money any more, so why keep them?
