Merino wool

I was in Marks and Spencers the other day and they were selling 100% merino wool sweaters for around the €50 mark.

Is there any difference between these tops and the technical tops that are much more expensive? They were fairly similar in feel and weight to the technical tops.

They are a bit more dapper in appearance than the usual technical tops and you could probably run straight to the Shelbourne afterwards for a fine wine.

I've a merino geansaí and I doubt it would handle the abuse my sport specific merino takes. It's a much looser yarn, if that's the correct term, than the sports stuff. So it gets those balls on it and isn't as durable when I compare it with tops I wear day in day out whilst carrying a bag.

Decathlon do good, inexpensive relative to Icebreaker etc, merino.

Doesn't everyone follow every run with a wine in the Shelbourne anyway?

Jesus, there was carnage in Sandyford Aldi this morning. People were leaving the shop with literally trolley-fulls of skiing gear. No merino left by the time I got through the crowds :(. Some recession

Funny thing is - when you actually go skiing, I find you rarely need the thermal gear - its way too warm.
Just a summer compression top or light tech t-shirt for me under a micro fleece and then ski jacket. Often find I need to ditch the fleece too.

I was in two of our local Lidls a couple of weeks ago when they were doing the kids ski gear, now that was carnage. Again, people were walking out with trolleys full of stuff, I just about managed to find the one item of clothing for our kid for when she goes skiing. I'd say it was because people thought we were going to get hit by snow like last year and not that we're all still flush with cash.

As spurs says, unless you find yourself stranded down a ravine awaiting rescuing, you get very warm very quick when skiing, last time out I just used the jacket and a heavy base layer I had, never felt the need for the thermal underwear, even the one time we got stuck on a lift in a crazy blizzard, our bodies with a decent jacket and trousers stayed lovely and toasty, it was our face that was suffering.
