It's a mass public sector strike in the UK over pensions and not an actual transport sector strike. Schools are also closed while there may be some delays at airports for customs and immigration.

Shows the problem of a vertically integrated operation. If Translink rails were managed by Network Rail or a third party then IE could run trains to Belfast as BE are doing on the roads.

Of course IE would show solidarity by pulling the DDs and putting on 29Ks instead.

Network Rail is a government company - if they owned the rail network, I presume their staff would be out on strike too, leaving Irish Rail unable to operate a service.

But presumably Network Rail are also on strike and any operator would be loathe to operate without signalling, level crossing operation, etc.

A tiny part of me is proud that I managed, not only to say the same thing as Victor, but also to say it before even Victor could say it. Today is a happy, happy day :)

Network Rail is not on strike. Full rail services ran in England, Scotland and Wales today with the exception of the Tyne and Wear Metro and Glasgow subway.

Was in the UK today and on a train. No disruptions. People seem to be using the train to get to protest marches! No delays at airports either in the north of the country.

The one-day strike has been called in protest at the government's plan to make public sector pensions less generous in the years ahead.

I am proud to say, that we both seem to have been wrong, but he said it first. :)

Of course, Network Rail isn't in the state sector, it just happens to be (fuzzily) owned by the state.
