Some good films for Christmas

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for some good films for Christmas. I'm not talking about ones that have the festive season as their theme, but rather classsic films of any genre (well maybe excepting porn and horror :)) that appeal to a broad age group. If I hadn't seen them about a million times already, I'd recommend the Indiana Jones trilogy or something like that, but I'd like suggestions across the board.

Back to the Future Trilogy would be another, I often re-watch it around christmas. In fairness though you can't go wrong with Die Hard 1&2, the perfect christmas movies :D

Christmas is the perfect time to watch Lawrence of Arabia.

It's a looooong movie and needs some time tinvestment.

Sames goes for the Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Always looked forward to those at Christmas time in the cinemas.

For some reason Hook is a great film to watch at Christmas.

Even though it's set at Thanksgiving rather than Christmas, all the snow makes Planes, Trains & Automobiles very festive. Still hilarious, and suitable for the entire family. An unbeatable way to spend 90 minutes.

Bad Santa has become a modern day Willie Wonka for me around Christmas

Look no further than Joyeux Noel for Christmas Eve.

Outstanding flick and really puts you in the spirit of goodwill to all mankind and all that Jazz.

Willie Wonka is my all time favourite though.

The Magnificent 7 / Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - I love these at Christmas time

The Labyrinth always reminds me of Christmas. For some reason it always seemed to be on on Stephen's Day when I was growing up!

Came out in the cinema last year and out now on DVD.

I love all the 80's fantasy films around this time Labyrinth, Legend or Willow. Especially Willow actually!

    Elf with Will Ferrell.

Its Christmassy plus it's very funny considering it's a proper kids movie

Myself and my Bro always watch Die Hard 1 on the run up to Christmas. Still a fantastic flick that hasn't aged at all.

Another vote for Planes, Trains and Automobiles at Christmas time. Most of John Hughes movies in fact, especially Ferris Buellers, an all time favourite of mine.

When Harry Met Sally is always a good one to watch, particularly if you haven't seen it recently.
I also have a soft spot for The Goonies. Gotta love those feel good movies at this time of the year.

    and for good reason!

Also, Home Alone is great one too. Love Actually is great for getting into the christmas mood, although I find it best to watch before christmas.

FFS he wants films to watch at Christmas that are not Christmas films so that rules out Elf & Home Alone. Do people actually read the op?

Gremlins is a good one for the whole family but it might be a bit too scary for very young children.

If your looking for nothing too taxing after the Xmas dinner The Princess Bride always gives a laugh or any 80s comedies like Weird Science.

Willow is a great shout. I haven't seen it in years but I loved it when i was younger.

The Princess Bride i would also mention in a similar kind of vein. Cracking film.

Hah, that's funny. I've seen it several times and get so wrapped up in it that I'm totally oblivious to the fact that it's not set at Xmas. It's defo an Xmas movie in my book anyway.

I always get this weird urge to watch four hour long films during the holiday / new year season. It was a double bill of Che one year, Love/Exposure the next.

Nothing says Happy Holidays like 240 minutes of upskirt photography and religious satire.

Christmas is the time for films which at pretty much any other time would take up two evenings viewing. Ben Hur, Das Boot, Lawrence of Arabia, The Twn Commandments, etc. nothing like spending the days after Christmas sprawled across the couch with a fire burning, a cup of tea and a 20th Century Boys marathon.

The Grinch, The Goonies, Star Wars.

Another Christmas, another Christmas movies thread in which everyone recommends Die Hard.

Die Hard is the perfect example of not being a Christmas themed movie but the date in the film is in December. How many other great films are set in December? Not many; logistically would be more difficult to make the movie; more expensive sets, to have to rig them out with christmas decor and lighting, and acknowlegdements in the script etc etc

Can't wait to watch Die Hard but I will only watch it when head home for Christmas on the 23rd. I could watch it tonight but its not the same with out the brother there quoting each line before it happens and my mother walking in and going "This shít is on every year"

Any of the harrpy potters have a christmas feel also.
