RIM Blackberry Playbook - Firesale?

There are a few mumblings of a firesale across the water once again.
Last time it was the HP Touchpad, this time its the RIM Blackberry Playbook.

RIM has started allowing employees buy a 16GB model for $99, a 32GB for $149 and finally a 64GB for $199. Report here.
This coupled with the fact that they knocked off a whopping $300 off each model shows that something isn't right for RIM. Which means that something is right for us!

Gizmodo have a report on the whole thing here.

As an aside, this lad Chris Wade, the lad behind many jailbreaking programs has already rooted it, with the help of two others so far, so maybe we can have Android on it in the near future.

I'm not sure if this a real BA (yet), or if it will even materialise, but better to be alert than not!

I think a RIM Playbook fire-sale is just what we need for Christmas! Here's hoping they start floggin' 'em soon and for cheap. ;)

Il have to pass mate, no way of getting ice cream sandwich on that, good find however for the budget concious individual who doesnt need 3g support and can live without a HDMI output. It would no doubt suit an image concious student who wants to do light browsing and maybe play a bit of angry birds, aided by the tablets ergonomic design. However the battery life mightnt suit all, and being a Chinese clone it will probably go on fire/turn into a communist and eat all your euros.

If this were HUKD id be adding heat as this is one hot deal

A lot of people are saying this is just an employee discount coming up to Christmas as opposed to an actual fire sale ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭groom

The $199 price wouldn't be bad even. I've seen one in action and they're pretty well built. HDMI out is a nice feature

Oh, I'm in agreement that this could be a great deal, upandcumming, and I'll most likely buy one if they come in at the rumoured price.

But I'm just trying to mention that this could very well be a way of creating a stir for these and the discounts may never arise for us regular joe's.

Hopefully that's not the case but people shouldn't get their hopes up too much!

OK.. I'm reopening this as this would suggest a Firesale is likely!

Still €405 on Pixmania IE though.

There's something not so appealing about this IMHO.. remember it is only a 7" screen so not exactly massive. The email is supposedly locked down unless you have a blackberry phone too.. I don't think the demand for this would be anything like the HP Touchpad...

yes it is only a 7" tablet and there is currently no native email client on it. AFAIK though they will be releasing an update with an email client in the not to distant future

Yes, it's a security feature, no emails are stored on the pad, you can draft emails on it but they can only be sent and received via a paired Blackberry phone.

Currys UK was discounting this last week at £249 and a further cashback offer from quidco, making it 150 according to HUKD. Most likely a sign of things to come.

Dont know what the story is with over here. however they are only 198 us dollars now in walmart, so I reckon its a worldwide price drop.

RIM is writing off the playbooks and planning to continue selling them off cheaply.
RIM to take a $485 million loss in Q3 earnings due to unsold PlayBooks

RIM has just come out with a sobering statement ahead of its December 15th earnings report to tell the world that it'll be "recording a pre-tax provision" of $485 million in relation to unsold inventory of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. In simpler terms, that means the company is wiping nearly half a billion dollars off the value of its inventory, simply because it doesn't believe it can recoup it in sales. RIM reiterates that it has "a high level" of unsold PlayBooks in its warehouses and that it intends to continue an aggressive promotional push to get them out and returning at least some sort of revenue.

150,000 PlayBooks were shipped to retailers in the third quarter, but RIM has seen very positive feedback to the deep discounts it has been pushing and claims that the number of sales to consumers during that period is higher still. Though these numbers are relatively small and the writeoff announced today is undeniably big, RIM has chosen to look on the bright side and intends to treat the discounted sell-off of the PlayBook as a constructive exercise that gives the PlayBook OS a wider audience and firmer foothold.

So the lesson is - stick it out post the Christmas rush, and you'll see the price drop further...

That is the most retarded feature i have ever heard of. No wonder they havnt sold. It was bad enough that the iPad required a computer to set up the tablet (which is no longer the case really with iOS5) but that feature is just mental.

Not necessarily. They still want to make the biggest recoup possible for the tablets while getting rid of them. Surely the best way to do that would be to sell them before Christmas when people will want them for presents. After Christmas there will be less demand along with cheaper competition. They've already tested the water with the $199 sale where they sold very quickly.

To be honest... you should always google a company you've never heard of before ordering from them - just because you read them on here doesn't make them reliable.

You've no-one to blame but yourself there buddy!

No signs of a RIM Firesale so I'm closing this!
