im thinking of buying one as im havin trouble spottin cows in the shed and the ould fella is gone during d day so a few questions...when the chin ball is put on him and he starts to mark the cow in question in d morning would she keep til the evening to ai and likewise if she marked in d evening would she keep till morning.this is our first year in suckling so im not well up in this area, were calving 18 cows so were thinking its border line on numbers for a stock bull..so a vectomised bull is the way we think:confused::confused:,ive seen a few fresian bulls but they were very cross hoors, any one here useng such bull and to what effect,,thanks all:)

I have a friesian bull vasectomised with a few years. Great job. Any breed will do the job but a cross bred bull is probably the best. It was E65 or thereabouts when i did it but prob more now. Just be careful as, while the bull is firing blanks, HE IS STILL A BULL and should be treated with respect at all times

If a cow is on standing heat in the morning then AI her in the evening and if in heat in the evening then do her in the morning.

18 cows wouldnt be a lot of cows for one bull unless he is under 2 years old. A mature bull bull with no injuries should be well able to handle 30 cows

    Kealar,

When do you plan to use? Is it now or next spring?
You could buy a weanling now and get him done. Remember to allow 6 weeks before you use him to allow him to flush out all sperm.
I wouldn't go paying big money for one, when you can get one done yourself cheaply. I've seen them advertised for big money on Donedeal.

    Covered here before too..

Just wondering. What kind of sheds will these animals be in? A bull with cows that are in heat will do a lot of chasing of the cow around the shed. This could lead to another cow getting hurt etc. as well when the bull jumps, if the cow slips on slippery concrete or whatever, you could end up with one of them having a broken leg. Just something to keep in mind. We have all cubicles and would never leave a male animal in with the cows, simply because of the risk of injury alone

We keep saying this but, a teaser bull is no different from an ordinary bull except he's firing blanks. Being a teaser doesn't make him wicked.
Pick the poorest weanling you have and get him done. Ideally one with a bit of height and already showing signs of following cows. The weanling I did 2 yrs ago, was worth only about €600 when I did him. I sold him this year, while he was still under 30 months. He made €1400. He more than earned his keep.

I want to breed my own replacements and have BB weanlings aswell. How do I do this with one bull. With AI, I can pick easy calvers for young heifers, simm for red Lim cows and BB or Char for the rest.
Anyone that has had a teaser have been happy with the results.

he is right its not hard to get it done so why keep them on after a year or 2 at tops

Did the vet send the cord away for testing to make sure he cut the right cord?

He said a week and he will be ok and to let him with a dry cow for a few days because he might have sperm left in his lines..

Can't remember to be honest. Maybe a week or so. I don't remember it as taking a long time to come. Quality seemed fine. they do take a fair lot of abuse, especially from older bulls, so expect to find it thrown in the field with a broken strap some day. Old levi belts and a bit of fishing line are handy to repair it.:D
