    Scary.

He was a threat. They had to silence him.

It's possible that he was set up in a sting operation.
He had a consensual encounter with the maid in question.

It's not beyond the realms of plausability that Sarkozy's people bribed the maid to change her story. Elimination of political rivals and all that jazz.

DSK was heading the polls to win the presidency pre the socialist primaries. He was due to declare his candidacy the week after he was arrested.

Could be coincidence or could be the long arm of Sarko. *shrug*

It's a bit of a stretch to suggest that a decade's worth of sex scandals could all have been set up by Sarkozy.

What has Berlusconi got to do with this though?

The only one he was arrested for was the maid though.

And if I was going to frame you Pickarooney for something, I would target your weak area...DSK was a known sleaze, so a sex scandal is the handiest. If he was an alcoholic, I would have him breathalised while driving or something.

The French didn't care at all about his wandering crotch, it was the accusation of rape that killed his career though.

I suspect there were some dirty dealings and underhand goings on by the Sarkozy regime. It's the French way to get nasty with those they see as threats and opponents - up to and including blowing up vessels in a friendly country's waters and killing a perceived opponent, as they did with the Greenpeace "Rainbow Warrior" ship in New Zealand.

Strauss-Kahn was doing well in the polls and looked set fair to beat Sarkozy in next year's presidential election. ;)

Naturally, Sarky and his cronies looked for Strauss-Kahn's weak point, his Achilles heel. And, given that he has long had a reputation as a barking pussyhound, they found that heel in his pants.

If you think that the Dominic Strauss Khan rape trial /case was brought about as a result of a Sarkozy plot then yes you are an idiot.

I don't think it definitely was, but I think it's all very convenient.

Nice attitude, by the way. You're going places.

So there has never been any plots in the whole history of politics?
I wouldn't trust Nicolas to walk my dog.

Certainly is a dirty game alright.
The recent Irish Presidential Election has to go down in the books for me. All candidates smearing each others name and for the one person who had no dirt brought up to get in ... Michael D. Higgins.

    Gotta love politics huh?

He didn't 'rape' the maid. It was completely consensual.

One rape allegation = Private and political reputation destroyed.

*french secret agent* "We will give you $100,00 to change your story"
*poor maid seeing an opportunity* "I want 200"
    *french secret agent* "Bien Sur!!!"

not really - if sarcozy lost then he would not be able to manipulate what is going on (along with merkel). DSK had very very different opinions on what should happen - coincidently he was taken out of the picture just when it looked like he was going to slaughter the little man sarkosy

not very idiotic at all, if you follow current affairs. :p

He eventually reaped what he had sowed.
No one tricked him into shagging all those females previously but given his character/inclinations, it might come as no surprise that he exposed himself to such an opportunity for his ways to backfire on him.

As the saying goes, in the end "He was his own worst enemy".

I wouldn't say its quite unique to them but, rather like making cheeses or sauces and things like that, they seem to have a special flair for sneaky intrigues. :):)

Also, it meant that Sarko was able to get Christine Lagarde put in as head of the IMF, and she is very popular within his party, the UMP (arguably more popular than Sarko himself and the moment). Killed 2 birds with one stone!

Come on people....this was nothing to do with the french presidency, it was about opening the way for Le Garde..."La Americane" as IMF head, a week before the US hit their debt ceiling and a few months before the euro crisis turned properly contagious.

The French would probably have still elected him after all this came out, but his tennacy of the IMF became untenable at a crucial time in the bank's role.

[edit] Ivy beat me to it, but I'd contest that it was more about the IMF than possible presidency.

Not so much of a stretch to suggest that knowledge of this could easily have been used to end his political career. It could possibly be one long string of coincidental events, or something more sinister. Its one of those things you'll probably never know.

Despite his obvious inability to control his sexual urges, he was actually a decent candidate, as far as French presidential candidates go.
