Laptop Headphone Socket

Hi there, been having some trouble recently with my Toshiba laptop & was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem & how it was resolved. Basically when I plug earphones into the 3.5mm socket there's a huge amount of static on the right side & sometimes it drops out completely so I can only hear through the left earpiece. I thought at first it was the earphones I was using but I've tried with several pairs & the problem is still there so reckon it's the socket itself.

I assume the problem relates to an internal contact that has been pushed out of place or something but I have no idea how serious the problem is. Would there be many places around Dublin that could fix something like that? Would it be a very expensive repair?

Try one of these for a cheap workaround.

That could be an option, though I would prefer not to have too much stuff hanging out of the computer if possible. What's the story with these, do they act as the soundcard when playing music through the speakers as well or just when earphones are plugged into it?

I had the very same problem as yourself and got myself one of those USB yokes.
If I have the USB soundcard plugged in, I get sound through that; otherwise I get sound through my laptop speakers.
I find that I get a little static through the adapter - but at least I am getting sound.
