I've been asked to pick out my own christmas present and i was thinking of going with a general tool kit for bike maintenance, i have never done any before and i have no tools but i fancy starting to explore the Giant Defy i got on the BTW scheme last january - i was thinking of this:

Anyone any opinion on this or other suggestions for getting started.

Seriously though, looks good - seems to have everything you need. No better feeling than taking your own bike apart and putting it all back together again. Remember to get some grease, chain lube, degreaser etc.

I have that exact one, very happy with it. They reduce the price from time to time, it was £39 a few days ago.

Thanks, didn't see that recent thread, info is there alright. Also i will wait until the kit is cheaper again - i'm not in a rush, even for a christmas present.

    I have a degreaser,

3 in 1 oil ok for chain ok?

    must get some grease and...

etc?? Anything in particular an absolute must?

3 in 1 oil will gunk up your chain. Better to invest in some wet-lube like Finisih Line. And grease-wise its similar. Don't go sticking something that goes on a car onto your bike! Teflon based grease works best on bearings.

Basically keep the bike in running order with the cleaning, lubing and with hopefully your new found mechanical skills in the new year the bike should give you years of pleasure.:)

Oh and do check your your tyres and tubes if they need replacing.
