Hi folks dont know if many people have had this problem with vw but in doing a bit of research over the web found out thatsome problems arent that straight forward.

firstly i had to get my driver side window insert replaced as it stopped working got a fella in a local garage to install it, part was second had from a breaker off a 07 passat, fitted no problem, but then i noticed that my airbag light was on continuously and was coming up airbag fault. now i didnt blame the fella i brought the car to and he had siad that it will prob turn its self off. never did so got the car put on a diag and it came up with this fault

    Vag-com shows:
01221 crash sensor side airbag, drivers side(G179) 29-00 short to ground.

got this printed off brought the car backt o the mechanic and he says he stripped it down and tested all the wires ect but couldn't find anything, said because there is so many sensors and wires it could be anything and recommends bringing it to vw now.....

firstly i dont have the cash for that second i need to get this sorted as its already out of nct two months..

....and then i went onto answers.com and asked a mechanic he said

"When that window was replaced I'm sure they damaged or left the drivers side impact sensor unplugged . This is what needs to be checked next . The impact sensor is located near where they replaced that window. This needs to be checked next" i actually was on the phone to the mechanic at the time and sai this to him but he said he had already checked this so.......the fella in answers.com said

"No it's an impact sensor located under the drivers side floor molding or ceiling molding by that window. Either way that shop is responsible for the repair since there was no issue prior. You don't have to do to the main dealer any shop should be able to figure this out unless there just qualified to change parts and not able to diagnose problems . If that's the case the shop should not be in buisness . Regardless who fixes this I would tell them that if another shop fixes it and it has to do with the window repair he is 100 percent responsible to reimbursed you and have that signed"

my mechanic has given up tho cuz he says hes tried everything...fat lot of good that is to me.. in fairnedd he didnt charge me :) but as i got friendly with him i dont think i could start accusing him of breaking my car, i know hes tried to fix it but hasn't being able..

so i suppose what im asking is has anyone had the same problem or come across this problem or knows how to fix it or knows someone that can fix it..im in the wexford area but work in Dublin and the car is a vw passat 2005 1.9tdi..cheers folks hope ya enjoyed the read

One thing u never said.did the mechanic try clear the fault with diagnostics.u never said that they did r didn't.secondly a number of connections in the door where disconnected doing the window.my guess is the airbag switch was disconnected while checking the window with ignition on.now it's just a case of reseting the airbag light which is simple

if he probaly unpluged something, turned on the ignition to move the window motor or something and this threw up the fault. the fault will more than likely stay up even do he would have pluged it back in.

when you got it checked with vag com did you try clear the code? was it the full version of vagcom or just an ebay job you got yourself?

yea i had it check with a fella up in dublin who said he had the most up to date software to erase codes but it didn't work, also your man in the garage said he brought it to a fella in another garage who had a better diag kit but she still couldn't delete the error code..so my understanding is that there is a problem and the car keeps finding the error even tho its being deleted by the vag com mechine...

The first guy from answers.com that you quoted is right, the crash sensor is in the door on that model Passat. It seems to be too much of a coincidence that the fault only appeared after the lock was replaced in that same door so it must be somehow related to the lock replacement work. This should not be a difficult issue to sort out for someone with the equipment and knowhow.

found a place in wicklow said it shouldn't be a big problem once the car wasnt crashed and said maby the fella didn't have the right diag gear for the vw codes..going to leave it with him on Friday to see how i get on..

    Where are you located?

    (1) George Dalton (already responded to this thread) come highly recommended if you are anywhere near Portlaoise?

    (2) Nissan Doctor also recommended around the Dublin area........

Both are very helpful and knowledgeable on this forum.
