Their time has passed, they wasted it with Norv tbh

This isnt the unreal chargers team with Merriroids and Phillips terrorising QBs, Jamal Williams a brick wall in defence, Rivers, Gates, Sproles and VJ on the top of their game and LT in his prime. Norv managed 8-8 with that team, says it all.

Now they can barely keep Gates healthy for two straight weeks and he's not getting any younger, Sproles, Williams, LT and Merriman are gone, VJ has made it quite clear he's mad to leave and definitely will in the likely event of missed playoffs and Rivers is all over the place right now and could be going down the Bernie Kosar route. Phillips is the only one there still playing at a high level and he's turned into a right little cheap shot artist. Their offensive line is also absolute trash.

It'll take quite an effort to turn that team around, make no mistake. Norv Turner and AJ Smith are equally culpable, Norv for being a ****ty coach that couldnt get anything out of the players when they had them and AJ for drafting terribly and making awful personnel decisions, putting the team in a serious hole.

Del Rio deserved it, he made a terrible decision with Garrard and looked like a fool with McCown and last week's QB fiasco. If they had last year's offense with Garrard they could have had a great year.

speaking of Garrard, i'm very surprised he didnt get a call from Kansas, Chicago or Houston yet

He's coming off back surgery so no surprise.

The biggest surprise for me was that no one managed to pick up Troy Smith who instead went to the UFL.

    Didn't he have back surgery?

Anyway, Tebow for player/coach at the end of this season is the only logical step in Jacksonville :)

Their decision with Garrard was completely correct, why pay starter money to guy who isn't fit and needs back surgery? Not surprised Del rio is gone, benching Gabbert and throwing your OC under the bus was pretty pathetic from him.

The Chargers offense especially is still talent-wise one of the best in the entire league; Gates, Jackson, Floyd, Rivers, Tolbert as well as good prospects like Vincent Brown and Ryan Matthews. With a refreshed defense (and some o-line additions) the Chargers can return to play-offs next year. Maybe not win anything, but they can easily make it if they find the right coach.

Jaguars to be sold; Del Rio fired <

New headline on the NFL website. Looks like the owner wants out also. Truly is bad times for the Jags and I wouldn't be surprised if they were the next franchise on the move. They should have taken Tebow in the Draft. Would have filled the place for the last 2 seasons being so close to Gainsville.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭Syferus

I'm still aghast that Del Rio didn't draft Tebow. They needed him for more than just the position, but to save the entire financial future of the franchise, for them he should have been the first person on their entire board.

yep agreed. Tebow to Jacksonville was the obviously choice to put bums on seats. They have struggled for a long time to do that.

So I assume LA will be favoured to get the franchise then despite their continual failings with NFL franchises.

Sorry just read the updated article on espn. The Jags are being sold to businessman Shahid Khan. Hes confirmed the team will stay in Jacksonville. The current owner confirmed he'd rejected offers from California.

Thing is with him he said the same thing about the Rams when he attempted to buy them and then there was claims that he was trying to move them. One of these guys from everything I read about him that will probably stay in the city for a couple of years and then move it.

I would be surprised if they moved to LA. I think most LA would much prefer either the Raiders or Chargers moving there.

Definitely the Raiders, they're LA's team imo, huge fanbase there and every time they play @ San Diego the Raiders fans travelling from LA outnumber the Chargers fans there two to one.

Just out of curiosity, If they do move which imo they should, would the supporters stay loyal or find another team??

As much as I would be against LA getting another franchise having blown it multiple times in the past the fact is they are the #2 TV market in the US and the only top 15 tv market not covered by an NFL franchise. So its gonna happen.

I mean look at the alternatives

The next biggest markets without an NFL team are

    Orlando at #19
    Sacremento # 20
    Portland #23
    Charlotte #26

    Panthers in Charlotte?

Orlando wont get it if Jacksonville cant hold onto it so close by IMO.
Sacramento would hardly take it ahead of LA in California
And Portland are probably hindered by Seattle already having it in Washington state.

So I would think LA is the most logical one alright. Jacksonville seem to have struggled with everything for a while now. Between a team that doesnt look good to watch, falling crowds etc, and always associated with rumours of the franchise leaving, it would be hard to stop the outcry of a move to LA.

Quietly got 1000 yards already. That snuck up on me. Almost like Thomas Jones with the Jets, got 1000 yards in no time.

As a Jags fan yesterday was a fairly eventful day. Del Rio sacked, GM Gene Smith gets a new 3 year contract and Wayne Weaver decides to sell the team. Madness!

Del Rio had to go really, he would have been fired had it been a normal offseason last season I think. Seems like a decent fella and I couldn't be happy that anyone lost their job, but his clock management and challenging were truly awful. It has been ongoing for years but the last 2 matches really highlighted it. As for his replacement, although Mel Tucker has done a good job with the Defence this year I wouldn't like to see him get the job. I think the Jags really need to get an Offensive Head Coach to develop Blaine Gabbert and the offense. Also the Defense has improved this year but was awful last year when he was the DC so I think he maybe just flavour of the month (like Koetter was last year when he interviewed for Denver HC). I know Mike McCarthy calls all of Green Bays plays but I would like them to have a look at the OC Joe Philin (I think?).

As for Gene Smith getting the new contract, I'm on the fence with this one. He had a good draft on 2009 but 2010 and 2011 (so far) haven't been great. The roster had so many holes though it was always going to be difficult to fix it in 3 years. The fact he was given a 3 year contract shows to me that his job is depended on Blaine Gabbert (which is not looking good at the moment). He also had a fantastic FA class this year with Defence and if he can do something similar this year with the Offense then the jags won't be too far away in the Division next year. Jags fans are really spilt on him but I am willing to give him more time. He also will have input in chosing the new coach so it will be "his" coach this time. There are strong rumours around that he and Del Rio really disliked each other so that may have been a big issue.

As for Weaver selling the team, the man who bought it Kahn has some Auto Business and says he is going to stay in Jacksonville. I would tend to believe him as Jacksonville has a huge port so he may see the city as help to export his business products around the world. All in all, I don't really mind if it moves or not as I live in Ireland. It seems to me that it is the same as before, if the fans go to the games the Jags will stay, if they don't they won't. Simple really!

On other things that have been discussed here, I don't know how people are actually saying the Jags should have taken Tebow. Fair enough he may have put fans in seats but you know what will do that better and for longer, Winning! I don't think you are going to win long term with Tebow (he may prove me wrong). If you are taking a player to sell tickets then your team truly is going nowhere. At least the Jags are trying to do it the right way (although Gabbert may not be the answer either). This is why I have respect for Gene Smith because he wants to do it the way he thinks is right and didn't take the easy way out and take Tebow to please fans and for Marketing. As for how do you start support the Jags, well I got into AF about 4 years ago, was watching a programme on Maurice Jones-Drew (didn't have a clue who he was) and he came across really well. So I said I would support whoever he plays for. I didn't know what I was getting myslef in for haha, but have stuck with them. I am personally happy I did instead of jumping ship and supporting a succesful team that 90% of people in Ireland do.

Jacksonville has the largest city population base in Florida yet they still are far less popular than the Bucs and Fins. LA does seem like the logical long-term solution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭johnmcdnl

Just reading there on ESPN that it could be pretty hard for the Jags to get out of Jacksonville...

They have a lease on the stadium til 2029 and unless they loose money in 3 consecutive seasons due to not enough fans coming to games they can't get out of the lease...

    from ESPN linky
While Weaver is confident Khan will keep the team in Jacksonville, there is nothing written in the deal which obligates Khan to do that. Weaver's confidence stems from assurances Khan has made to him personally and the fact that the Jaguars' lease to play at EverBank Field runs through the 2029 season. If the Jaguars wanted to leave before the end of the deal, the lease requires the team to prove they had lost money in three consecutive seasons or to convince a local judge that the city was failing to properly maintain the stadium.

never mind paint drying. i've always equated watching the Jags to some sort of very mild, boring heart attack. They tease you by playing well for a quarter of a game, or by beating the Ravens (somehow) and then going back to their usual lack of focus team :( its a sad end to Del Rio's tenure here, but hopefully now we can make some big changes. i'd love to see Mel Tucker keep the head coach job, hes done great work with the defense. And hopefully these new owners wont mind us spending a bit of that money we've got lying around from having the lowest salary in the league. Bring in some high powered FAs and kick this team up a notch

With the state of attendances I'd say that's not going to be much of a problem.

Jags fire their WR coach, move their QB coach to the vacant WR coach position, and move their OL coach to the QB coach role.

    Okaaaaaay.....

Dirk Koetter has been an Offensive Coordinator for most of his career and will have a dual role as OC/QB coach with Jags. Dude was a QB in high school and college. One thing people forget that coaches are not always stuck to one role. Sometimes the only coordinator job they can get is a positional one and they have to move up from there.

Oh and Sheppard is an ex WR and it makes sense to move him there. Had various OC and WR roles in his career mixed with other positional roles.

Rich Eisen had Sam Farmer on his podcast. Offered an inside view on relocations. He said its far more likely that St. Louis moves to LA then Jacksonville moves to St. Louis. Its gonna cost the Jags approx. 100million to buy out of their lease though.
The league also in a difficult situation in. Minnesota. The vikings lease is up in January and they are demanding a new stadium which doesn't seem to be coming. The Nfl really wants the Vikings to stay in that market. Its one of the teams they really don't wanna see in LA.
Also there's apparently gonna be a stadium built in LA which could accomodate two teams. Just like meadowlands. Your man reckons the chargers would join the Rams in St. Louis.

Just in the case of teams moving - we'll say for instance the Rams to LA; who do their fans follow then? Do they follow the new Rams or the relocated Jags?

They won't be following the team that moved, that's for sure - just look at Baltimore and the Colts, or Wimbledon and MK Dons in the UK. The venom towards the teams that leave is very intense.
