Also interested in hearing more about this. What would happen at the club?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 760 ✭✭✭mach1982

It would be for computer enthusiasts , hobbyist and any one who has a interest in computing . It would up to club to decide what projects we would do

If you have any ideas on what you like to do just leave them in this thread .

I would hope it would promote open source and the fact computers are not scary, and a place to meet fellow geeks/nerds like me :-)

I'd go to that to check it out. A pint & some nerd talk. Sounds great. Is this the only place to get info on it?

I got the idea from the guys who set the Galway computer club up

Can you give more information about what "projects" you are thinking? I dont think I'd be interested in just going for pints and talking computers, tbh.. But I think the idea has potential..

I'd be interested in that. Build a PC?

    Have a look at this.

    Main Website: http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page
    Video of RepRap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02myN2Y3iB4&feature=related

This is a 3D printer. Its more of an engineering project but whats actually involved is perfect for this sort club. Main things involved are building circuit boards, programming & altering open source software etc.

All the plans & software is free.
Problem is that firstly you would need somewhere to work on it & tools. Secondly, that all parts come to roughly E500.

Don't know if it is a viable project for a computer club but I'm just throwing it out there because its really cool. Plus the inventor, Adrian Bowyer is a legend and is one of those people who should be remembered in history. He designed this so he could give it to the world for free.
His dream - A manufacturing plant in everybody's home.

I wouldnt see the point in building a 3D printer (no offence smjpl) to prove how clever we all are.. I wouldnt see the point in reinventing the wheel just for the sake of it..

I'm not trying to be negative but I think it would be better if there was a practical purpose or at least some good cause that benefits from the efforts.. Could there not be a purpose behind it as well ?? Maybe help out a community project or charity?

Love the idaes peopel keep them comming .

No none taken. The only point really is introducing people to circuit board building. You could also look into the Arduino micro-controller. You can invent pretty much anything with these as there adaptable to nearly all projects.

Again just throwing it out there.

I took apart a HP 2605 last week.. I had a look inside and I dont think I had any optimizations to offer HP on their design.. :D ..

I've built a few circuits for guitar stuff and college projects.. that would be something that would of interest, for sure..

Just wondering mach, have you spoken to the Galway guys about what they've been doing? Or did they just end up sitting round drinking pints, and singing Sawdoctors songs.. :pac:

On the JA_Purity theme set the Main Menu to be in "Top" module position, rather than left as it will be nicer looking to navigate your site. There are also module positions on that theme down bottom which would suit the Latest News module nicely, look at the theme preview to see these positions I can't remember off hand.
Try also changing or removing the header images completely as they bear no relevance to the website. I've used the JA Purity theme before and just removed these images. But good idea to have a site all the same for this and hope it works out well. PM me if you need help tweaking the theme :)

To fix the top menu on that template from going brown on hover add the menu class suffix "-nav" minus quotes & no caching to the main menu module under advanced parameters. Site looking better!
