I had a first gen iPod (click wheel) that I replaced the battery on. One day on the train from Dublin to Limerick, it suddenly stopped working. As I started fiddling with it, the back suddenly popped off the iPod and flew across the carriage. Turns out something happened to the (3rd party) battery, which swelled up like a pillow, blowing the back cover off - but not before it crushed the hard disk inside, killing the iPod. No fire in my case, but it really freaked out one of the other passengers, who stared at me with a look of shock for the whole rest of the journey.

That is lithium batteries for you... my advise always stick to the manufactures battery and dont use a generic one bought from eBay.

This shows a fire with batteries that are of similar construction to those found in phones.
