iPhone/iPad with 3rd party OS?

Forgive me if I'm deluded but what would stop Google/RiM/Microsoft etc from developing an OS for Apple products and vice versa?

If the OS was to be given free, then each developer could make money from app and in-app purchases alone.

I am assuming either the business model is unattractive, unworkable or restricted by prouct design legally.

    Comments?
Feel free to call me mad/stupid

Well, AFAIK you can get some form of Android on the 3G. [x]
It's not the same, but it's proof that it's possible.

Like above it is possible to put android on a jailbroken 3g iphone.
Apple don't want you changing the OS on their ios devices.

Not Apple as such, but there's an ongoing project to put Android onto the HP Touchpad.
