Looking at one rim in particular.. Ambrosio Crono Tubular rims...

To build up as a road/cross wheel for the new year... maybe some hope hubs, 2 and 3 cross with a 28/32.. light wheels and wont break the bank.. 500-600 with tubs..

    Theyre light, which is nice..

But can't find anything on reviews about flex/rigidity..

Anyone go down this route or know anything about these rims?

    Thanks in advance

Very common rim for alu tubs. Doesnt break easily, light, stiff enough but not the stiffest. You can build pretty light wheels with these if you use hope hubs, probably around 1250gr i d say. You can also look at Kinlin TB-25, i think they are a bit heavier, but stiffer.

The kinlin tub rims are heavier but much stronger since they use a niobium alloy.
mavic reflex is another great option and should be cheap with the current CRC voucher codes. They use the same alloy for this rim as used for the open pro,a719,cxp33

    thanks for replies...

a wheelbuilder shop recommended the kinlins.. for the same reason.. a little heavier but stronger.. are they american? maybe when you go sub 400gs flex is a factor..

reflexes too.. mixed reports, but mavic and easy to get your hands on...

i see velocity do tub rims.. an escape at about 360gs..
there's always ambrosio nemesis... p-roubaix, stylish!

I think ill go alu instead of no name carbon rims.. any thoughts?

supoose when you build up the wheels, the tubs themselves arent cheap either.. a factor to consider...

    How much do you weigh?

Tubular tires start from 15euro and they go up to 75euro for the top of the line veloflex. I guess somewhere in the middle is a good compromise. A good set of clincher tyres is not that much cheaper anyway.

I think Kinlin is based in Taiwan. they make all of Halo's rims, also for IRD and many others. they have a good reputation for building up a lightweight wheelset for pretty cheap. they make the lightest high profile alu clincher but its expensive. Halo market the same rim but 1.5mm narrower

I have some 36h tubular rims that would be great for cyclocross as theyre 22m wide if I recall correctly. I built them into a wheelset once but never used them, I needed the hubs for something else so took the wheels apart.

I'd be looking for 40euro for the pair, they are late 80's/early 90s rigida pro. 420g I think

AM, weigh just under 11 stone.. whats that? 69 dude!

would go light enough on bikes too.. not a huge power merchant.. more of a cadence rider.. would be nice if this changed!

true what you say about tubs.. taking countless tubes into account,(caught out and paid 8.50 for one the other day!), its only a few quid more...

K champ, kinlins do look good, i saw irds on wheelsmith.co.uk before.. light as well... maybe ive gone off the cronos, everything says braking is bad, they do flex and theyre narrow which will be trouble for cross tubs...

narrowing it down though! thanks for the offer, ill bear the rigidas in mind!

If you are thinking of Kinlin rims I would check out this site
    http://www.bikehubstore.com/
I have a set of Scott/Brandon's Ultralight Hubset which I used to build a 1kg tubular wheelset. He also sells nice spokes so you could get all parts from the one place at a good price, very helpful and friendly guy.

Well about 1040g for the wheelset, very like these but for €350.
I only bought my hubs off him and no duties, doesn't say that you won't be but even still they are great value. Very impressed with the hubs, time will tell how they hold up but they won't be getting massive mileage as a hilly/windy race or hillclimb wheelset.

1040!!!!, jesus, but like you say b.houra, I suppose super light wheelsets are for certain races only..

c'mere, maybe iver overlooked mavic reflexes.. 360gs they claim... extremely easy to get and good braking.. might be the easy option..

    anyone try a set?
