RTPI on O'Connell St ?

Can someone please explain to me why months after the launch of RTPI, with seemingly most signs having been installed (haven't seen any new ones going up in months now), that there still not a single RTPI display on O'Connell St north bound.

Surely this is one of the busiest bus stops in the city, yet still not even a single pole has been put up!!

Meanwhile we have active displays in completely pointless places like Parnell Square south bound where hardly anyone ever boards the bus.

Also on Westmoreland St you have one non working display (16A stop, you know the one with tourists heading for the airport, might be important for them to know when the next bus is by). And yes I've reported this to the NTA.

And another stop next to this, 3,11, etc. with a pole and no display.

And is there still no displays at Dublin airport?

It makes no sense to me, that some of the busiest bus stops in the city, which service the 16A to the airport and therefore very important to tourists and our image, have no displays, madness!!

Fear not bk,salvation is at hand.

You may have noticed the presence of big burly builders and their impedimenta along OCS this week.

    Yes..it's true....RTPI is officially coming to O Connell St YAY !!!! :D

The next step is the erection of the shiny stainless-stell poles and the men from Clare then puttin the box on top, after that its BINGO !!

It's even hoped that we may have a Bus Shelter ( ) on the street for 2016...a suitable living memorial for the 100 years of Easter Week commerations !

Mind you if the shennagians up on St Stephens Green North are anything to go by,it'll be 3016 before we get agreement on such stuff.....;)

Bring along your cameras or oils and an easel and get recording some of the most inventive street furniture to be found round these parts ....:)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

A number of extra signs are being fitted at the moment on O'Connell Street northbound.

Hopefully it won't take 4 months between these two steps like it has on Westmoreland St so far. I'm sick of looking at the display less steel pole at the 3 stop on Westmoreland St for the past 4 months.

But thanks for the good news that we have movement in the right direction Alek.

For goodness sakes bk just like the lack of non-stop intercity bus services, you want everything now.

The project is being rolled out - perhaps the ESB were not in a position to wire the signs up.

    Just be patient.

You forgot to mention the 100% accurate perfect version of the Leap Card even during the testing stage for a non invited tester ;)

Seriously though I've been very impressed with the work of the NTA over this last twelve months, if you think what they have delivered this year compared to what the old DOT did over many years, there is a huge improvement.

I remember hearing Dempsey and the other cronies promising many many projects for many years, but the difference is this regime has spent less time talking, and more time actually doing.

We've seen it with RTPI, Integrating ticketing, bus licensing. All of these things used to take forever in the old regime and were always going to be dealt with soon but got delayed more and more. In this regime we've seen actual delivery rather than continued broken promises.

Transport infrastructure in this city has a long way to go without doubt. But look at this time last year and look at now. We've come a long way in the last twelve months in my book.

LOL, don't get me wrong, I'm also incredibly impressed by the progress made by the NTA.

As you say, they have done more in the past 12 months of their formation, then 10 years of all the others put together.

I've nothing but the height of praise for the NTA.

I've also a great deal of praise for the NRA and RPA.

Don't see me giving constructive criticism and feedback when I see something wrong as an attack on the NTA. It is me trying to do what little I can to give feedback from the point of view of a heavy and varied public transport user, to help improve what we have as much as possible.

I hope they'll be in the right place this time. The operating display on D'Olier St for the 9/13/40/122/123 is halfway between (and behind) its stop and the 83/16s/128/14 stop.

The stop at Ulster Bank on Dame Street also had its box on top for months before finally operating this week...

Always thought that absolutely insane; O'Connell St/Westmoreland St is pretty much the Dublin Bus depot for the city centre and not one shelter in that 1.5km odd stretch.

    Madness Ted.

While in no way wishing to offer any support to the last government, or take away from the excellent work of the NTA, suggesting that the various projects have been delivered this year due to both the NTA and a change in government is stretching things substantially. Public transport investment projects take extended periods of time to deliver.

RTPI was always scheduled to happen in 2011 and ever since 2009 integrated ticketing was planned for this year too. It is a happy coincidence that these changes, along with the rollout of Network Direct are all happening simultaneously.

All down to Dublin City Council wanting to retain the advertising revenue from all street furniture on O'Connell Street, and not allowing Adshel to put shelters up under their contract with Dublin Bus.

Maybe it's not all down to them, but to many in the eyes of transport that is the viewpoint Joe on the street is going to have, considering that whilst this time the dates scheduled are being met, how many times did they get pushed back previously?

The impression to the average person out there is this government are delivering and the other one were just talking about things but people on the street saw very little progress.

Indeed but the reality is that RTPI was always down for delivery this year and I can remember the original articles stating that on the Dublin Bus website when the AVLC project started. It has been delivered exactly as originally outlined.

Similarly since the integrated ticketing project started to take effect in 2009, it was stated that 2011 was the delivery year.

Stating that this is down to a change of government or the NTA is nonsense.

Indeed the rollout of the AVLC system that drives RTPI was substantially completed by Dublin Bus in 2010, and finished in spring 2011 before the change of government or the involvement of the NTA.

People do not see the detailed design work that was ongoing to deliver these systems - as I said any major public transport project takes extended time to deliver.

Retain what advertising revenue on OCS?

All bus shelters have advertising panels - that is what funds them.

DCC want that revenue in addition to that from the other street furniture it has - the shelter at the taxi rank and the JC Deceaux panels.

There are no advertising panels on OCS or taxi rank shelters that i can think of, maybe im wrong
surely its to protect the look of the street by not allowing bus shelters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

There are heritage style shelters available - it is not fair on the public that they have to stand in driving rain without shelter while awaiting a bus.

The worst is the stop on O'Connell Bridge. It should never have been put there in the first place.

Unfortunately any new shelters/signs on O'Connell Street will be short lived once they start digging up the whole street again for the new Luas line.

Ah here pclive...are you windin uz up r wha...?

The "Look" of the Street....crikey,a few Bus Shelters could ony IMPROVE the look of the place...marginally :o

It's worth noting that there was a Taxi Shelter on the central median Rank pre the multi-million makeover of OCS....but then it equally has to be remembered that until the intervention of a certain junior ministerial friend of the Taxi industry, that Rank was never designed to be replaced in that location anyway.

    Urban Planning ....Irish Style....

Why does the one at the bottom of Grafton Street for th 4/7/8 still not work?

Its been up for months just not connected up.

Bit weird since this is the busiest stop on the bus route.

    that's not starting construction until 2015 - i.e. never.

Well, preparatory works are already underway. Some trees have been removed along Eden Quay and the footpath is being dug up at Burgh Quay.

Probably for the public transport priority bridge, which will have a track in place but was to go ahead independently of the line itself proper.

yeah but in 2008, it was supposed to happen last year, in 2007, the year before, in 2006, the year before that....

And as far as I can see, there isn't going to be any integrated ticketing this year. Being able to pay for some public transport modes using a card is hardly revolutionary, I mean you can pay for all public transport modes with cash at the minute....

It's a start....(a well overdue over original expectations start), but at the same time my point stands - the rollout happening now has nothing to do with a change in government or the NTA.

The contracts were all signed last year.

That used to display for both stops. I suspect the stops are going to be revised there anyway as the 83/16s/128/14 is very close to the traffic lights.

Actually, it's the opposite. DCC don't want any third party advertising on O'Connell St. at all. The only advertising is the store fronts of the shops themselves.

Also, I believe like Patrick St. in Cork, the council are previous about what street furniture is being installed on the city centre. Hence nothing on O'CS or the quays.

I would guess that the new RTPI displays didn't go through without a fight. Mind you they fit in perfectly with the ultra-mod O'CS streetscape.

The other one between the 46A/145/140 and the old 19/A stops only showed the 19/As too
