    Diesel?

They are due every 4 years so if it was reg'd in Nov 07 then its due now.

Did they not do the belt with the water pump?

At 4 years/50k miles, in addition to the normal oil service/vehicle inspection, its due:

Timing belt kit with water pump normally,
Brake fluid change(should be its second one)
    Pollen filter,
Fuel filter is every 20k so depends on when it was done last
Air filter is due every 60k/6 years but most would change them more often then that.

Jasus poor enough form to throw back on a belt with 25k on it.

water pump had a small leak so got it done........they asked if i wanted it done and i said no ........main dealer, over priced, did not really need doing.etc and knew i would be getting it done later at independent.(relative)

Not a case of needing to be done OP. It's a case of while you're in there, you may as well do it. For the 50 quid it would have cost you could have got another 50k without doing it.

I can't beleave somebody put back on the old timing belt on that.when they had it stripped down so much for the sake of a couple of euro.thats bad practice in my eyes.that would never happen in my place.the customer would be advised that the belt should be done.

But the customer was asked, and told them not to do it. What more could the garage do?

But thats his own choice, not the garages fault.

The auxilary belt should be changed too by right. I seen a car breaking one a month after the timing belt was done.

I'd always change it on a B5/5.5 passat and a4 etc as its a fair bit of labour to change.

Most other aux belts, like on the B6 Passat, can be changed easily so depending on their condition, wouldn't need to be changed with the timing belt. Having said that, when changing a timing belt, especially as cars get older, you'll usually find that the aux belt needs doing too.

I always thought it was bad practice to put a belt back on, especially a timing belt. Maybe it's ok?

If you have evidence of when it was changed last, and its still well within its life span then yes, if an inspection shows the belt/tensioner/guides etc to be in perfect condition, then you can refit it safely.

The water pump was a warranty job so did the garage give you a price for the timing belt at that stage? It should only have cost the price of the kit extra really. Maybe they quoted full belt change price? - After the 4 hour coil pack change thread, anything is possible.

I'll see your €80 headlight bulb change and raise you a €160 throttle body clean on a 02 1.4 Focus in a Dublin main dealer :D

I should have taken a copy of the invoice. In fairness I think it must have been someone's first day in the job of doing the invoices or something and they made a mess of it because the same invoice didn't have any oil on it even though the car had a full service with filters, plugs etc :D
