Phantom drive Windows 7

A friend of mine has a Dell laptop running Windows 7. Recently he has a phantom drive showing (nothing plugged into USB ports). His machine keeps making the 'drive removal sound' which is driving him nuts.

I found online it's a known issue with having Office 2010 installed but he is running Office 2007. Anyone know of a fix for this? I can't find anything online or on MS support site. Thanks.

Edit: Just found this thread on Technet.
