Bike vandalism on NUIG campus

Being a cyclist in NUIG, it never fails to amaze me how many bikes have their wheels kicked in from the night before.

It seems to me that security are not exactly pro-active in preventing bike vandalism. Maybe a name and shame system with pictures from CCTV footage?

One thing I know is...NEVER leave your bike on campus overnight.

If someone vandalizes your bike, the offender can easily be tracked down by filing a claim via the Gardai and NUIG security. Surveillance footage is only passed onto the Gardai.

However, the Gardai often claim the footage is 'illegible' to save themselves the work and hassle of investigating a complaint. That's the lazy civil service for you...

I would just move my bike to prevent this happening at the fall of night (even though one shouldn't have to...)

2 years ago the students union promised a secure bike lockup that would require id to enter. Last I heard they were looking for somewhere to build it, but haven't heard anything since.

I guess the SU are too busy making sure the rich don't have to pay fees. [/troll]

Of all the things to vandalise, a students bike has got to be the sickening lowest of the low. Harsh penalties I say. There are only two locations to police, both of which are close to the students bar.

    Do you come here often?

There's loads of bike racks around the college, not just two. And people park their bikes around signposts as well. Security can't police them all, especially when NUIG is an open campus.

It's not just on campus but in the city centre as well. I just came home to find my bike in pieces. I lock it at the Spanish Arch racks since I live nearby. I've always worried it would be stolen, but this is worse. The entire front wheel and spokes are broken off as well as the seat. Any one have any idea of approximate repair costs?? Or the cheapest place in town? I have to admit I'm heart broken. At least if it was stolen I could convince myself that someone really needed it. Like this, it's just a waste :(
**Also for those of you on campus, if you know you are leaving your bike over night think about locking it in the stair well of a building. I have seen a few in the MRI. Just keep in mind that the entire building locks down at 6 PM so you definitely won't get it back till the next day.

Think it was around €45 in Richard Walsh (near Omniplex) when I last got a wheel replaced. Thought it was pretty good value at the time. Some lads had a great time jumping on my front wheel beside the library.
