    Lo All,
I was just wondering if the Gore RideOn shifter cables are worth the price for use on a MTB?

I have a new bike and seeing as there is hydraulic brakes on it I was thinking of upgrading the shifter cables to those to try ellimate the issue of crap in cables. Are Gore the best or are there other options worth considering?

    Any thoughts?

    Eoin

In my opinion one of the best up-grades you can do for slick gear changing. Money well spent, have then on my winter MTB bike for close to 3yrs now.

I fitted them to my wife's hybrid about a year ago. She has been happy with them and they haven't required much tweaking in the meantime. If I recall correctly though the inner cables are a bit thin and the front one seemed a bit fragile where it was clamped into the front mech (it unravelled a bit and a few strands snapped off, but having said that although it looks like it should have pulled through it is still in place and working, which is particularly impressive given that that particular mech is a reluctant-to-move little bugger).

As to whether they are the best though - I don't know but they have competition from other brands like Nokon and Yokozuna (not sure if Yokozuna make gear cables for MTB though, haven't dug that deep). Prices vary a bit though, or so I found when looking for new cables myself recently, so it is worth shopping around regardless of which set you go for.

For the money they are a great upgrade to a bike, especially a MTB used in crappy conditions in my opinion.

I have them on mine, and will buy them again. They last for ages, and shifting is very good/consistent with them.

i agree here,i use a syreinge to inject grease into the cable outers and they work fine,35 beans for a set of inners if shocking i can get a full set for less than a fiver in my lbs and when the grease is used their fine no shifting issues at all

If you think Gore are expensive have a look at Nokon. :)

That's grand for weight weenies, but the sealed Gore systems are the best performing for winter road/ cyclocross or MTB. That's why pro mechanics fit them for dirty races such as Roubaix.

    Better than Nokons?

From the sets that I have looked briefly at they are quite close in price, certainly closer than I expected. It depends on the set you opt for, of course, and on the retailer, but as one example so far as I can tell this Nokon gear cable set for £44.99 seems functionally equivalent to this Gore Ride On sealed gear cable set for £39.99.

    ...if one set is enough.

I had to buy six or seven sets of Nokons (one basic set then a bunch of extensions) to do two full length disc brake cables and a full length gear cable for my hub geared commuter.

I think I got them from Bike24 or Rose.

One advantage of Nokons is that you don't need to use cable cutters, and the ends of the outers are always perfect.

@Lumen, I think that Nokon gear cable set actually has a longer set of outers than the Gore - 2x 1.4m claimed for the Nokon, 2.05m claimed for the Gore. Mind you, I gather that Nokon may require more length of outer cable than other brands due to their design, or so I've read (I've never actually used them myself). Plus, other sets from each brand might differ by a lot more than those particular sets so the relative value for money may vary a lot too.
