So basically the nintendo 3DS has been out for a few months now, so what's your overall final score on it?

Its still a bit early to tell really. Its better than it was. It has at least (to me) 3 good games worth playing. And the price drop certainly helped. But it has a long way to go. But it hasn't even been out for 9 months yet, so there's no rush.

Great console, terrible selection of games.

I'm liking it, picked up Pilotwings at launch. Too short tbh.

Then Ocarina of Time, which is a good game. but i ended up stuck in the 4th dungeon and still haven't got back to it. :pac:

What with Super Mario 3D land and Mario Kart 7 released/releasing this week it seems like there's finally some good titles.

Also: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=452803 nice list of upcoming games, most of which i'll probably end up being interested in :)

eshop was weak at the start but the virtual console including titles like Super Mario Land (first game i ever owned), it's sequel, Links Awakening...oh and the 20 free ambassador titles i think it's going pretty good. On the 3DSware front i've only picked up Pyramids + Freakyforms (other choices include a Gameloft golf game...and um...that's it!) Really enjoying freaky forms, pyramids was good for a couple hours fun as well. And there's currently 19 announced titles for 3DSware so i'm sure there's gonna be a pretty decent flow there :)

I'm happy enough. (even though all the above and i'll just end up playing mario kart 7 online tbh :P )

Surely one's "final opinion" on the 3DS would come after its life cycle? "Current opinion" would be more appropriate.

Anyway, I think it's a great handheld, but Nintendo were foolish to leave it without big, original titles for its first few months. Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart are the games it needs before Christmas, looking forward to getting both. I played 3D Land over the weekend, the level design is excellent and the 3D really adds a sense of depth.

A fantastic machine, great potential, but the game selection lets it down badly & has done since day 1. Here's hoping next year sees the damage undone

I would have thought as much damage has been done from poor battery life and need for large plastic add on to play certain games, as the current sparsity of must have titles.

There's zero titles out at the moment which require the circle pad add-on, and in future games can only use it as a bonus to makes things easier...not as the only option.

So you can still play the games without it, it just wont be as easy. In summary then, lucky owners who have paid 140 euro and upwards will have a poorer gaming experience if they dont get the "stylish" circle pad add on?

Only really monster hunter as of now. Same happened with the classic controller pro. Both requested by Capcom for Monster Hunter.

I can't see too many more games which will be greatly improved by a dual circle pad set up.

I can't see too many more games which will be greatly improved by a dual circle pad set up.

    - Resident Evil: Revelations
    - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D

Both have shooting elements, and would (IMO) work better with the circle pad. Peace Walker wasn't hard to control, but the circle pad would improve it further.

I want a Pokemon game :P or I might go for the inevitable re-release 3DS lite with added circle pad.

Yes, you can play Nintendo DS games on a Nintendo 3DS. Make sure you get the right region though (i.e. don't get an American/Japanese 3DS if you're not going to be there 90% of the near future, as you won't be able to play European 3DS games on it, as it's region-locked, and you'd have to get all your 3DS games from there).
This also means you can't get a DS in the EU and import games from outside the EU (or Australia/NZ) for whatever reason (cheaper, not available in the EU, etc).

It's almost surpassed the first year sales of the original DS and we're not even at Christmas yet. Slow start but it's definitely on the right track.

I bought the 3DS in October and use it every day on my commute to work. Just finished Ocarina of time 3D this week. The 3D effect works great in that game imo. Right now I'm playing Metroid 2 and Link's Awakening until Resident Evil and MGS come along.

Overal I am happy with the device; there are just not enough great games for it yet. I would not mind a Majora's Mask remake though :D
A new Metroid? I'd like to see that.

Can't understand why people are talking as if it's a crisis. It's surpassed the original DS first year sales in eight months.

    Mario Kart
    Super Mario 3D land
    Zelda Ocarina of time 3DS
    Starfox 3DS
    Pilot wings
    Virtual console stuff.
Still a huge library of great DS games.

Don't see what the problem is.

    Mario Kart - formulaic, rehash
Super Mario 3D land - formulaic, rehash, some originality in it though
Zelda Ocarina of time 3DS - direct 15 year old port with 3d
Starfox 3DS - rehash of a near 20 year old game
Pilot wings - rehash or a near 20 year old game
    Virtual console stuff. - overpriced
Still a huge library of great DS games. - not why I bought a 3DS

Don't see what the problem is.

I'm not complaining as much anymore given there's new titles trickling out, but if you want to be pedantic

Sometimes things are formulaic cos they're good.

No disputing that, but it gets old. Even with Skyward Sword, the formula is showing its age & at times might feel repetitive. I can't complain too much as its great to see some new games feeding out for the 3DS, it'll get there in time though. There's certainly no crises or anything to worry about with it

    Atrociously designed console.

A handheld that has a battery life UNDER 6 hours should've just been kept in R&D for another year until they could figure out the problem.

Pretty damn dissapointed actually. DS games look bad on it, and I can't play 3DS games in 3D cause the aliasing drives me nuts, cause they PUT A PROCESSOR IN A 3D MACHINE THAT WASNT POWERFUL ENOUGH TO PRODUCE AN ANTI-ALIASED 3D IMAGE.

Or don't shoot for the moon when all you can reach are the clouds.

Low battery life WILL have a disastrous impact long-term once even more consumers realise that their iPod/iPhone/Android has better battery life AND can take calls, in addition to having cheaper games.

Maybe you don't want your kid to have an iphone....;)

So I admit I am still to be convinced by the 3ds but whatever its short comings, it will still be infinitely better than playing on an iPhone or Android for most Games. There's only so many cut the rope, angry birds variants I want to play.

...how long is battery life on those devices though while playing games?

    Good point.
Video playback is rated at 7hrs iTouch, 10hrs iPhone, so I'd imagine an hour less for gaming.
Mind you, the device is smaller.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

I'd say it would depend on the game. I know our kids can drain the iPod Touch in about an hour of heavy game play. The DSi lasts a lot longer IMO.

It's a hell of a lot less while playing games. My iPhone 4 used to run out of charge about 3 or so hours into playing games
