hi guys, im thinking of buying a second hand diesel car. Im currently doing a lot of mileage commuting to work and im going through petrol like theres no tomorrow.
I have a budget of around 3k and im looking for something reliable and cheap to keep on the road, not too bothered about having anything stylish or comfortable. anything upto a 2 litre engine im willing to consider.

I was looking at a mondeo but im open to suggestions as im not really a motor head :)

    thanks in advance.

Hard to bate a good passat or any tdi to munch the miles and give you good mpg.

I would take a look at this OP, especially if the flywheel has been recently done. Thats the only real achilles heel of the mondeo of that era.

(I dont know the person who posted the link from adam btw ;) )

The Octavia, Mondeo and Seat all good choices in that order. However, would come down to the price and condition NCT etc. of the individual car.

a tad over priced for a high miler, near 10 year old base spec mondy it has to be said, with a short nct.

yeah,I buy and sell a lot of these, they're a good jammer.
Privately that car should really be at just less than 2k, maybe 1950 etc.
Thats what the market is yielding for them right now with that milage/age/condition/nct.

In my experience, their great cars. Cheap to run, easy to get parts, and reliable.

quite good, lots of bits for them widely available, bit boring to have in your life, but if you want frugality and reliability, they're fine.

I basically just put it up for the average price i saw on carzone, its negotiable. And im gonna book it in to be nct'd again now that it's only 3 months til the end

The only problem with the VAG stuff in general is that they seem to command crazy money, even the rough ones with intergalactic mileage.

Peugeot 406 HDi is a fine car:
