I'm one of those people that hates the fact that I 'have' to do something!! So when I was told by our P.P. that We 'had ' to attend a pre marriage course I was not best pleased to put it mildly. However (and this is the part where I eat my words) my long-term partner and I attended an Accord weekend 3 weeks ago in the southeast, AND it was a revelation to both of us. Nothing rammed down our necks, very little religious stuff, common sense, and NO giving out personal stuff (my greatest fear). It was a time-out period for both of us. So if anyone reading this post 'has' to do one of those courses-enjoy it, it's not half as bad as you think it will be!!

Yes, they were good. But the €200 fee for it was jaw-dropping. Even my devoutly Catholic Mam was shocked to hear that cost.

On the flip side, I was really looking forward to our pre-marriage course (Mount Argus) and it was rubbish. I was terribly disappointed.

I have heard good things about Accord though.

What are these courses for? I'm getting married next may and have never heard of them?

Pre-marriage course. Essential if you want a church ceremony.

I want to save our selfs 150 quid and print a certificate up but my other half doesn't like the idea of lying to a priest. There a money making scam that I really don't see the point of. Sounds like something a Scientology would requite...

Why get married in a church and support the religion if you don't believe in it Rew?

And sure what's the difference between Christianity and Scientology besides the age of the belief? Virgins giving birth, zombies and transubstantiation seem no more plausible to me than us all being space aliens... if anything, the aliens thing sounds more reasoned!

Didn't say anything about disbelief, but the premarrige course requirement I find difficult to swallow. I may eat my words after having done it but I suspect I'll just be more annoyed.

We did the course with Avalon. It only cost us €120 and we did it on a Saturday. Check with your priest first as some can be picky. It was great fun and went through practical stuff like getting couples to talk about issues like sex, family, money and why they were getting married in the first place. I found it a great laugh.

Ahhh, thanks. Not doing the whole church thing, but was curious. What do they teach?
