Ken Russell has died at home aged 84

I love his exuberant style but after Tommy it all gets a bit patchy. The last movie of his I've seen is Lair of the White Worm back in 1988. A real ground breaker with Women in Love, a real stinker with The Music Lovers and then his masterpiece, the acid tinged, glam rock styled Religo-totalitarian nightmare The Devils.

I've never actually seen any of his stuff. Although I did watch a documentary that discussed "The Devils", it looked rather crazy for the time. The following spoiler is graphic and probably shouldn't be read if you're religious.
Sweet Jesus! Crucifix Masturbation by a nun.

    RIP

Ah thats terrible, one of the batty greats of cinema and the man who also made some tremendous music themed films for the BBCs Monitor and Omnibus programmes in the 60s.
The Devils, Crimes of Passion, Altered States, Tommy - if he could go "Maximum Ken" he would!

My own favourite though is his least typical film - Billion Dollar Brian which I think of as the most entertaining Harry Palmer films, the cold war goes nutzoid

They definitely don't make directors like him anymore. Altered States and The Devils were my faves.

I couldn't really stand most of his later work but he did make a great guest on movie documentaries. Certainly a charactor.

When he was on form (The Devils, Women in Love) he was brilliant, but when he wasn't on form, he was nearly unwatchable (Whore). I find it ironic as hell that his death coincides with the release of The Devils on DVD. I wish there were more directors out there like him. RIP.

when I first saw the news this morning my sleep deprived mind thought that it was in fact Kurt Russell who had died, was somewhat relieved to see that it wasn't but also saddened that one of cinemas most entertaining nut jobs was gone. There are few directors who were as out there and as stark raving mad as Russell, when he was on form he could create some beautiful and haunting cinema but when he wasn't he produced some truly terrible work.
